Can someone explain to me why we're still using HDMI when displayport is better in literally LITERALLY every single way?

Technically displayport is fine, but the actual plugs tend to break really quickly. That is pissing me off.
The only cables that were somewhat sturdy so far were the ones DELL ships with its products. However to buy them seperately is expensive as all hell.
Any recommendations?

Buy DELL ones that's what I also do.

It's a good investment, having the same cable for 2 years already.

Jewfag here. I'm in the same boat as you. No one in Israel even knows DisplayPort exists.

Because, as far as I can tell, manufacturers decided that HDMI is enough. Even though displayport has various advantages over HDMI. There is also the whole jazz with HDMI supporting audio and ethernet over the cable, where displayport only does video. The typical consumer would rather have a simple all-in-one solution for their needs.

I've got no complaints. I use DP on my graphics card but the monitors have to be wired up with HDMI on their end.
>>
>>53694957

I need to correct myself. I didn't realize that newer displayport supports audio and other features that HDMI supports also.

display port does do audio tho

It actually is considering the shabby build quality of the average displayport plug.
Something about it being 2 slabs of plastic loosely stacked into each other just sucks you know?

Necessity

HDMI can do 60hz up to 4k. Display Port is only needed for above 60hz, which the majority of people don't use.

Yes, long before DisplayPort

DP 1.2 did UHD@60Hz w/ 4:4:4 chroma sub-sampling well before HDMI 2.0 came out.
HDMI 1.4(a?) could do UHD@30Hz 4:4:4 or UHD@60Hz 4:2:0, which was good enough for the media industry at the time.

The TV manufacturers and content production industry move in lockstep, and let me tell you, there is not going to be a need they see any time soon for UHD@120Hz (DP 1.3), but as soon as they do, it will be provided with another HDMI revision, not DP.
>>
>>53695359
Of course, they want that backwards compatibility.

You, maybe. I don't use HDMI. I use glorious displayport.

Better in EVERY way? Sounds like OP doesn't use a KVM switch. DP has no emulated connection, so enjoy your hardware disconnect event and randomized window placement. Also, OP has a snarky attitude and should drink bleach.

Does DisplayPort have the same DRM features?

DP isn't even needed. HDMI 2.0 can do most of what a DP can do and HDMI can now do freesync/gsync. TV's will probably soon start adding freesync support and most likely the next generation of consoles aswell.

i'm on dual link dvi running 1080p 144 hz (without a problem) because the rgb range was fucked on both hdmi and dp with nvidia gpus for years.

supposedly it's fixed now but why bother switching now? i have all my cables routed in a built-in cabel channel under my desk and they're all tied together with velcro ties. that shit took like a whole afternoon and i don't want to do it again.

i'm also not keen on potential conflicts regarding audio where maybe i could get unwanted audio through dp or hdmi when i don't have that set up. this is rather unlikely though i guess.

component is better than hdmi. when i walk toward my television while using a hdmi cable, i can sex the pixels. I can see pixels with component but not as much. It's true that hdmi makes the colors more vivid but it also makes the pixels more noticeable.

>DisplayPort has a royalty rate of $0.20 per unit, while HDMI charges an annual fee of US$10,000 to each high-volume manufacturer and a per unit royalty rate of US$0.04 to US$0.15.

Because HDMI has the two letters HD so normies assume=quality.
