Should video tapes make a come back??.
>>
What? No. Why?
>>
Obsolete technologies don't make come backs.
Unless you're a stupid hipster.
>>
>>53691178
not gonna happen outside niche releases
>>
>manufacturers shut down last plant in 2008
>still can find them at the dollar store clearance isle.
>>

Nothing wrong with old technology.
>>
Optical and Magnetic media are dead.
>>
/vaporwave/ is leaking
>>
>>53691178
um, no?
>>
>>53691263

Vinyl and cassette tapes do sound better though.

VHS, CD, and DVD were just a ploy by the dying music and movie industries.
>>
>>53691309
>>53691325
you're right. I saw a spindle of 20 cdr's in the same aisle
>>
>>53691178
videophile here. vhs and other analog storage medias have much better quality than digital. movies on vhs are vastly superior to even 4k digital content. digital content just looks too "sterile" while video tapes add a certain warmth to the video.
>>
>>53691344
No they don't you moronic cunt, the only time old formats sound better is if you listen to music done by useless faggots who don't know how to mix and clip half the fucking sound off.
Fuck yourself.
>>
>>53691309
>not even the dollar store can unload them

VHS was fucking awesome.
>Ubiquitous in homes from the 1980s-early 2000s
>Nearly every device that played it could also record to it
>Trivially easy to pirate
>You could easily pass recordings along to your friends

The reason why we don't have anything like it anymore is because the big media companies would have a heart attack over it. Recording digital, high definition television to a format that you can easily pass along to people requires expensive converters and other equipment. It can be done, but it's not nearly as simple or inexpensive as home TV recording used to be.

why does this guy get all the (you)s? I said some retarded shit too: >>53691369

I don't know why services like netflix don't allow people with fast internet connections to stream movies at bitrates that are nearly indistinguishable from the DVD/Blu ray. I wouldn't mind streaming Netflix at 20-25mbps.

But the music streaming bitrate is mostly okay. As long as it's not mp3 at 128kbps. I think Spotify uses ogg vorbis at 130kbps and it shouldn't sound different from a 320kbps mp3.
>>
>>53691603
two reason- storage space and bandwidth. It takes plenty of space storing all those shows and movies. And the bandwidth they use is already insane

https://variety.com/2015/digital/news/netflix-bandwidth-usage-internet-traffic-1201507187/
>Netflix Bandwidth Usage Climbs to Nearly 37% of Internet Traffic at Peak Hours
>>
I'd except a modern tape based format returning, but not VHS.

If you were to use h.264 with MiniDV tapes, for example, you could fit 1080p60 video with surround sound and a reasonable bitrate.

Lasts for ages, easily recordable. You wouldn't use it for pre-recorded shit though.

Tape is still used today, anon.
>>
No.
Laserdiscs should.
>>53692247

They're nowhere as easy to use for sharing as video cassettes. A lot of them require you to remove the hard drive and manually copy the files to you PC.
>>
>>53691315
>looses quality the more you play them

Yes there is something wrong with old tech.

>>53691344
Nice b8
>>
One of these days I'm going to build an HTPC with a DAT72 drive and throw all my favourite movies on tapes.

very true

CDs used to sound better too back before they got retarded about the baseline volume levels.

I disagree with cloud based storage in general but if you even consider it with a datacap you're probably clinically retarded
>>
>>53691263
how did vinyl's make a comeback then
>>
>>53697163
>>53697116
For the record I'm continuing his list of green text, not advocating for cloud storage or cloud computing.
Anyone that does use cloud for anything besides presentations and reports is clinically retarded.
>>
>>53694039
Please don't promote laserdisc. I don't need hipsters and reseller scum driving up my prices.
>>
no
but vhs is still important
there are movie versions that are only on VHS

>HDDs are dead
>Tapes are dead

>>
>>53691344
As someone who exclusively uses a tape deck in their car, a brand new tape sounds almost equal to a CD, but over time it loses quality. Analog media is fun to collect and at this point that's about it.
>>
>>53698818
I've been listening to some 30 year old tapes recently and they still sound fine after all that time. A little crackly and washed out but otherwise good. I only have a crappy portable player though so may sound better on decent equipment.
>>
>>53699177
Yeah if you store them right, they'll last as really long time.
>>
>>53691535
Accurate, aside from Blu-Ray; that craze started around 2008.
