You do have backups, right?

I currently have 8 in my PC and I ordered a ninth that I'm too lazy to install, so it's still lying around.

Also i have one ssd and one 1tb hdd i have a htpc and can't cram my other 3 3.5in drives in there without ruining airflow.
>>
>>53690755
I'm at 4. One I use for backing up windows, two in RAID0 for gaming, one that I use for media. Outside of that I have 2 in one NAS that backs up to another 2-disk NAS and that first NAS also does USB backups. And I upload some of that to the cloud.
>>
One. HDDs are deprecated.
>>
>>53691192
How many TBs of storage do you have on your SSDs?
>>
>>53690755
I have eight 5TB, one 4TB, one 2TB, and two SSD's in my pc (all mirrored onto one drive or another, so I only have half the total space). Considering buying some more soon as I'm getting low on space again.

I have 8 4TB on raidz3 mirrored vdev so that makes it 16 disks + ssd for the OS + 2 ssds for zfs caching

I have nvme on my desktop 2 hdds on raid0

ssd on my laptop

2 external drives for my critical documents backup

Am I degenerate?

>>
>>53691388
Nah you're pretty cool. How do you organize your external backup drives? Mirror? Rotate through them?

What happens when one fails during a backup?
>>
>>53691388
>>53691478
Also, how do you upgrade when you run out of disk space?

I really want to use zfs, but I'm stuck with btrfs because it's the only thing that handles drives of an inconsistent size well.

I have a few 1TB drives, a few 2TB drives, a few 3TB drives, a 4 TB drive. I just buy new, bigger hard drives as I run out and add them to the btrfs RAID1.

Zfs's raidz2/3 requires all of my drives to be of the same size to begin with, and I also can't seem to easily expand later on.
>>
Doesn't matter for a desktop unless you're poor and can't afford electricity (in which case you should consider doing things other than buying arguably frivolous things), but for a laptop, any more than two will eat through power
>>
>>53691478
External/cloud backups for very important data

Mirror, zfs snapshot for the rest

I haven't tried zfs on JBOD like you have with your disks, all are WD reds. Zfs require ECC and if you dont have it and your file becones corrupt, you're fucked.

Expanding disks on zfs is very easy and user friendly, just read the documentation. I wont be upgrading soon unless high capacity SSDs magically drop in price

Yeah but it still requires restriping the entire array, doesn't it? That's sort of where I prefer btrfs here.

It would be really, really cool if zfs had btrfs' features - the FS is so much more mature, it just needs to be more consumer-friendly.
>>
>>53691607
That's what snapshots are for

http://www.unixarena.com/2013/07/zfs-how-to-extend-zpool-and-re-layout.html
>>
>>53691686
I don't know how snapshots are relevant here.

The article you linked demonstrates the key advantage btrfs has over zfs: you can add individual disks to a mirrored or striped zfs pool without needing to buy them in bulk / pairs. That's sort of what I was getting at.
>>
Am I screwed if I have:
500GB HDD on my desktop, no backup.
1TB on my PS4, I guess there are backups of game saves.

btrfs FS*
>>
>>53691724
Well like I said I never tried zfs on JBOD, it will work on zfs obviously but I just haven't tried it yet. So I wouldn't give that as a disadvantage to btrfs. Go check freenas or openmediavault forums.

Woth snapshot you can migrate your existing pool to a new pool with the new disk(s)

I already checked with the zfs developers and had multiple conversations about this.

They put it on their TODO / feature wish list, but with a low priority.

I'll be using btrfs until then.

One SSD is good for your desktop, everything else should be in your server.

I have 6 also, but only because most of them are 500gb models back when that was the $50 WD Blue model.

I only have a total of 750gb space on two drives. literally every pc part I have is a hand-me-down. my computer right now is basically a top-tier gaming rig from late 2010.

I have about 139 HDD's lying around the house in storage all of them working since last usage.
And currently in use 5 SSD's and 6 Hard drives in usage.
>>
>>53690755
Depends on what you're doing.

Laptop - 1 SSD
Desktop - 2 SSD, 4 HDD
Server 1,2,3 - 8 HDD
Server 4,5 - 7 SSD, 24 HDD
Server 6 - 26 HDD
SAN - 36 HDD.

Plex 1 - 4 HDD
Plex 2 - 4 HDD

I have 7 in total but only 3 on my computer (laptop), it has an msata ssd and 2 1TB disks and I have 2 2TB external disks, one for backups and the other for porn and other 2 500GB spare drives.

what are you storing, anon? I'm curious

Only when you have more storage than Internet Archive.
>>
>>53693795
Mostly Hyper-V testing and cold storage. VM snapshots, SQL DB's, Exchange databases.

And the Plex stuff. Mostly raw BD, HDDVD, and DVD rips.
