Is there a single board computer similar to the raspberry pi with gpio functionality that I can use with regular linux distros or even windows? Ubuntu Mate is nice, but I prefer the desktop software.

I did google it, but I didn't find anything.

Maybe LattePanda? It's more expensive but runs full Windows if you want.

Perfect! I can probably do all the same stuff with the built in arduino, no?

Literally just use a different distro on the RPi. They work with Arch, Ubuntu, FreeBSD, NetBSD, and a lot of other stuff. You can use Ubuntu with MATE even.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure only raspbian had GPIO functionality. At least that's what I've been told

ARM can be an issue for some people.
