Do routers not plagued by device drops (disconnects) or shitty usb speeds even exist?

find one you can install dd-wrt, tomato, or open wrt on. check the respective wikis for compatability. something thats runs tomato will probably be the easiest for you to deal with.

Cheap residential routers? No.
Build your own. They're normal computers running freely available software.

You're not going to get top-tier speed over Samba or some shit from an USB device on a consumer router, mainly because router CPUs really are pretty damn slow and unsuited for the task.

Even now that they're just throwing more cpu and ram at the problem while ignoring shitty firmware?

You can get a Cisco 1800 series router and a Ruckus 7000 series wireless AP off ebay super cheap. Nether will have the problems you describe.

I don't know what CPUs those routers have, but if you're expecting to get 1Gbps Samba speeds form USB I'm quite certain it's not enough.

>have pfsense router for internet facing shit
>desktop runs file servers because that's where everything is, no need for a seperate server
>have a shitty dir-615 with dd-wrt for when plebs bring their phones and need wifi access

It's enough.
You don't need a powerful CPU to do file transfers.

Apple Time Capsule 4th Gen with 3TB of storage.
