Apple's bread and butter is the iPhone. That being said, I want a new 2016 Retina MacBook Pro, dammit.
>>
>>53687617
Honestly Apple would be much better served if they just got out of desktop computing altogether and just focused on their tablet and phone lines. OS X only exists for pride and history at this point.
>>
>>53687679
MacBooks are far and away the best laptops on the market. They're not even expensive anymore when considering the price of the competition.
>>
>>53687709
Except for the shitt windowing system and except that you are not getting as much as you could for the price.
>>
>>53687679
they'd be stupid to do that. it's still ~15% of their revenue, and if the smartphone market becomes stagnated like the tablet market then they'll need something to fall back on. The premium smartphone market has already started to slow down.

Plus their OS is actually useful for video editors / graphics artists

Outside? And don't even begin to pretend that that thing actually reaches anywhere near 12 hours battery life when you actually make use of the ~i7 processor~
>Thinkpads have the best linux support, if you use windows, that's on you.

There's a solution for that. All they really need to do is:

The point would be to reduce Apple's development and support burden. Moving to a platform used by other companies would let Apple reduce labor to focus on the things that produce more return for them. Not to mention it would be a way for them to slowly phase their desktop business out by giving developers and users an exit strategy.

I've noticed this problem getting worse lately. Apple's product lineup is getting more bloated and complicated because they shuffle product names every few years while hanging on to old models on the low end for way longer than they should. Case in point: The Retina MacBook Pro was introduced nearly four years ago and has long been the definitive MBP with multiple display sizes and spec tiers, yet the chunky old MBP with platter hard drive, optical drive, and badly dated specs is still available for cheapo customers. I'm afraid the same is gonna happen with the Air, long after the new Retina MacBook has replaced it, as well as with non-Retina iMacs.

They also need to drop the confusing product numbering schemes (iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 4, iPad Mini 2) and just stick with the core names, like with the Mac, Apple TV, and iPod lineups. It's not like they sell "iMac 12" and "MacBook 7"; models are denoted by their year and display size, and the same should be done with iDevices. They at least seem to be moving in this direction on the iPad line, with the same Pro name being shared by two model sizes of the same generation.
>>
>>53688520
>You buy a Mac to have the hardware with the Apple logo.

rebasing onto linux doesn't do the business or it's users any favours.

It is. Hardware has peaked for the needs of 98% of the market. Now the selling point on laptops is battery. This is why they're using ULV processors and allow laptoos that are physically 90% battery.

Sure you can upgrade but you have to include the cost of an SSD and a first-world level of RAM (8GB or more) in the cost of the device if you want to compare it to an rMBP. Anyone buying a device with 4GB of RAM and a spinning hard drive in 2016 is a poorfag cuckold.

Apple had only one job: Put a fucking retina display in the Air, why did they just aborted that one port chink bullshit?

MacFanboi here. Here's the real problems with Apple hardware.

Charge double market rates for RAM, storage upgrades

Sell stale models for the same price after 2.5 years (Mac Darth Pro)

Reselling old chassis and parts because T Cook is a supply chain genius (Mac mini, iMac entry level)

Entry level models use 5400rpm HDs (in 2016)

Sell iPod shuffle mp3 player with 2GB (in 2016)

Not admitting that Apple are greedier than Jews, they love their 33 percent profit on all goods sold (51U$ for a lightning to VGA adapter! for fuck sake)
>>
>>53689402
>Entry level models use 5400rpm HDs

What Mac?
>>

4k mac, and macbook pro.

Pretty sure the 5k one does too
>>
>>53689420

mac mini, 4k imac, 13" macbook pro without retina display.

Yes, e-mail on a smartphone. E-mail on a device that can notify me instantly with a sound when i get my e-mail, and which i can just pull out of my pocket instantly to view it.
As opposed to a bulky fucking laptop that won't notify me of shit, and which is a hindrance to pull out all the time unlike a smartphone. Who would have thunk it?

Gathered i would prefer to read and write e-mail on my proper home PC on my portrait mode 1440p monitor. But home is home and outside is outside.
>>

oh wow it can run a strategy game from 2011 ok? good god for $1800 you practically stole it
>>
>>53687331
Uh what?

MacBook is by far the best ultraportable. rMBP is by far the best laptop. iMac 27 is the only reasonably priced 5K screen, the computer is just extra. No idea what Mini is good for and whether Mac Pro thermals are good enough.

Air and non Retina MB are the only products that should be killed off.

To be fair, anyone buying entry level MBP in 2016 is replacing that 5400rpm HDD with an SSD on day one.

I have a late 2011 MBP now with 512gb samsung 840 pro and 8gb of ram. Besides the display it's literally JUST as good (or better bc optical drive) for 99.9% of everyday macfag usage. Except portability, but only slightly worse.

T Cook is milking that supply chain especially with the new iPhone SE but fuck it, a capable yet small phone is radical these days, unfortunately.
>>
>>53689747
I think that'll only be two after this year's refresh (Air replaced with Macbook and no more non-Retina Pros)

>>
>>53689761
Except they charge you like fuck for the 'upgrade,' which you can't do yourself now on laptops and Mac minis thanks to all the glue and proprietary screws they use.
>>
>>53689761
Non retina, non IPS display is not better at anything.

Though what to expect from a guy still using optical media.
>>
>>53689867
Yeah the glue, soldering, screws on the newest model all suck, I agree. Which is why I'm just holding on to my apple products, like the fat mbp you can work on yourself, until it's unusable or something better comes along.
>>
>>53689565
What the fuck is going on with notebooks man?
I've seen the exact same shit cheaper when i bought one in 2011.
>>
>>53689909
Same here. Bought a 2012 Mac Mini quad Core i7 before they crippled it in the new model with dual core and proprietary screws and connectors.

Upgraded it myself to 16GB, 2 SSDs
>>
>>53689895
I said it's better for 99.9% normal macfag usage--how many parents and kids who buy this stuff have any idea of their display resolution? I know the display is obviously the weak point, but it's not that bad.

and how are you getting tasty lossless quality audio without ripping CDs? relying on shit tier torrents or 128kbps spotify playlists like a fucking chad?
>>
>>53689947
Nice, it's the way to go right now I think
>>
>>53689958
>how many parents and kids who buy this stuff have any idea of their display resolution?
They don't need to, this is why Apple doesn't throw around numbers and rolls with "Retina"

Point is, the newer displays are much better for literally anything, simply browsing is a joy on them and you don't need to understand shit to see sharper text and more vivid colors.

> relying on shit tier torrents
It's not that hard to get flacs, specially for classical it's a pain to avoid.
>>

>>
>>53690089
Thanks bro, you kept me from being the asshole to post this.
>>
>>53690095
Same as DVD drives, most people buying a Macbook don't intend to use it in a way that needs extra ports. If somebody HAS to, there are overpriced adapters/DVD drive.

If somebody needs the ports all the time, they probably use their laptop closer to a desktop replacement, and there is a more powerful rMBP for that.
>>
>>53690104
It has better colors and IPS is bright enough to be used outside, unless you happen to be right behind the sun.

So how often did you use your laptop while sitting outside with the sun raping your view from behind?
>>
>>53690089
I get that a lot of people scoff at CDs, but they're the best long-term data storage medium out there, and they're still fucking useful especially for audio.

I'm fine with apple trying to move on and make a thinner laptop, but I'll either stick with my optical drive model or buy an external cd drive until there's truly no longer a need, but that time hasn't come yet.
>>
>>53690053

>>
>>53690168
>They just wanted to make things in a 'slim' case
Because that's the entire point of the Macbook. The lightest and smallest laptop you can buy, something for people who already got a desktop and travel a lot.

If you don't care about "slim" and "light", there is rMBP.

At least my RAM isn't soldered in.

It's good enough for most people, nobody is going to crack your wifi to steal your horse porn.

>reliability is going down the drain
Wireless doesn't have to be cloud.

It's less about looking cool and more about being more convenient. No need carry shit like cables or usb sticks, you skip the "stick stuff in port " step.

And if you still need to move huge amounts of data securely and as fast as possible, well there is that one port.
