Welcome to /flt/, we are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are five ways to try Linux, you can:

0) Install a Linux OS, preferrably a GNU/Linux distribution, on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot a Linux OS with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about Linux and their frontends in general, GNU, Busybox, Heirloom, etc)
3) Be barebones and make your own Linux image from scratch (libs, compiling core binaries, making kernel)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with a Linux OS

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Windows 10 had internet out of the box and past installations of mint and xubuntu did, too. I'm using pfSense for a router, if that has any bearing on anything.

I just installed linux mint on a desktop that also has Windows 10 on it. I have it connected to the internet by ethernet cable and I can ping google, but for some reason I can't load web pages or connect to the repositories. Any ideas why this would be?

Hey guys. LXDE has a program called Brightness I'm trying to get for a different distro. I looked on the package manager but I couldn't find it. Under its properties, the command says "Brightness-level." I copied the program to my main os but I get an error saying Invalid desktop entry file.

What can I do to get it to work?

I don't know what the fuck "zypper" is, but it says it looked for "packages" and "capabilities", while "Krita"/"krita" is apparently "application" (according to the search output). Try "zypper in calligra-krita", since that's listed as an actual package.
>>
>>53689246
that's probably it. zypper is suse's package manager, like yum or pacman.

I might be a fucking moron.

I have a WD USB external drive that needs to be kept spinning or else the constant auto head parking will kill it.

hdparm and sdparm won't disable the sudo head parking, so how do I write a tiny file to it every 3 seconds to keep it spinning?

anyone else feels like Mate is being shilled extra hard on /g/ recently?

Anyway, xfce exists so I never really bothered
plus then theres new LxQt which also feels more interesting and like it has a future

but the truth is that I had Mate for like 2 weeks few years so I cant tell much
there was nothing interesting about it
>>
>>53693326
It's because MATE is way better than xfce, which used to be /g/'s choice and now people are switching to MATE.
>>
>>53693341
>>53693326
desu people should just switch over to Unity now, its pretty fucking good in 16.04
>>
>>53693341
How is it better? How did it become better? What changed?

And shilling started like 2 weeks ago
you could ctrl+f for mate before that in /flt/ and you would have same luck as with lxde
sure there might be something, but rare

ability to put launch bar at the bottom is not enough I feel
they need to allow combination of it with the main panel/taskbar thats on the top
its quite wasted space otherwise, to have launcher at the bottom, but actively run applications at the top
>>
>>53693352
More stable, more true to gnome standards, more development going on, it has more of a future with the upcoming Wayland support, and the guy behind Ubuntu MATE actually knows what's he's doing.

To be fair, it's just because Xfce has been languishing for the past few years and MATE has become much more heavily developed and has a future so people have slowly been moving to MATE for that reason.

When LXqt matures to a certain point, I guarantee /g/ will cum themselves over LXqt like they are currently doing with MATE.
>>
>>53693412
Legacy readers. When Ubuntu MATE LTS comes out, you will see people move from Xfce to MATE.
>>
What is the best versión of Ubuntu, Gnome, mate, xfce...?
>>
>>53693417
>Xfce has been languishing for the past few years
I think part of it is that theres not much left to fix or bring

>>53693430
next xfce release will be ported to GTK3
so I dont think mate has the benefit of being ahead for long
but I will be soonishly installing linux for my father to do internet banking in
and I will put mate there just to checkout whats new

seeing as beta of 16.04 is out so fast after beta regular ubuntu 16.04
I think there wont be much waiting
https://ubuntu-mate.org/xenial/
>>
>>53693352
It just feels fast, responsive and clean, I remember trying Unity (granted it was on way shitter hardware) back in 2010 or so and I nearly puked. They have polished the fuck out of it since then.

>>53693366
I agree, but you can autohide the launch bar

You can probably autohide the top bar too but I haven't tried yet, I don't feel the need yet

What is kernel freeze
and why is it just before the final release?

I would say that changing kernel without running beta version out, that it feels strangely irresponsible, is theres a chance they switch from 4.4 to 4.5 in that time window?

Kernels don't usually fuck up, it's known for being the stablest part of the system

In all these recent security alerts we had over the last year or 2, I don't recall any that were directly to do with the kernel, might have forgotten, but I'm fairly sure I haven't

Im having some issues installing Sonarr/nzbdrone in ubuntu.

Basically follow their guide on their website but when I go to launch it tells me it cant find the .exe file.

I just tried to install sickrage instead and get a similar issue. Am I missing an important step?

Ive tried both ways by adding it to the ubuntu software centre and using terminal commands to install.

Is LXQt ready and stable to install on Ubuntu for example? I want to try it out.

It looks somewhat like KDE(same fm,wm,...) but did they keep the simplicity and performance of LXDE?
I mean does the same people work on KDE and LXQt?

And last question, is there a distro that ships with LXQt by default?
Stay friendly.

Disregard the Windows aesthetics, this is Linux Mint.

I find this behavior strange. When I launch Firefox here on Linux Mint, it opens in this small resolution and then after a moment expands to the size of my full screen.

Is this typical on Linux? Does it do this for you? On my actual Windows 7 machine, it doesn't do this. Firefox will launch to the size of the maximize window without having to resize itself. It really isn't a big deal as it does fix itself once Firefox is fully loaded, but I can't ignore how ugly it is.
