What are some misconceptions about computer viruses? I am trying to learn more about them in hopes of one day developing software to combat them. Unfortunately I am dead broke and can't afford schooling but I still want to learn.

What some common misconceptions about viruses. Hell what even constitutes a computer virus?

One misconception I noticed is that a lot of people think viruses can do more than they are capable of. Like I am sure there are bad viruses but a lot of them are more like annoyances. Am I correct in this thinking?

Does anyone have any insight?

I think the #1 mistake people make about modern malware is that you'll always know when it is on your system. You see this a lot with the "hurrr I have Common Sense v2, so I don't have an anti-malware suite." They don't realize malware doesn't have flashy payloads anymore. Back then, it was all about attention. Now, it's about money. Why would a bitcoin miner be all flashy? You would know it was there. I could talk about this all day, but currently busy at the moment.

Basically, have an anti-malware suite. Also, Malwarebytes is NOT a single solution. It is an addition to a (free or not) suite.

Ummmm, great example, Bitcoin miner is the most flashy thing there is. Even a retard can notice slowdown and fact, that his computer is now vacuum cleaner.

Which suites would you recommend?

That is another question a lot of people ask me.

Did I somehow stumble into 2001? the fuck makes viruses anymore?
>>
>>53683893
Yeah, it wasn't great. A better example would have been something like a botnet I suppose.
>>
Misconception: we should protect systems with anti-viruses.
Reality: don't run untrusted software / software from untrusted sources, use an intrusion prevention system, implement least privilege principle.

You are the issue. Both are needed.
You don't always receive viruses via software installation.

I sometimes wonder how people get crazy adware shot on their computer. I have been using computers for a long time now and I only ever got a virus once and it was because I was a 13 year old make browsing seedy porno sites. Now I am 26 and have t had any issues. Why can't people just not click dumb shit?

>you don't always get software from installing software
Huh.
>>
>>53684027
Type that, but you know what I said is true.

You can get malware just from visiting a webpage; how do you not understand these things?

^this familias
been using this computer for 6 years now without any antivirus and it's still clean :-)

Albanians.

>>53684185
But if you did have something how would you know? Your computer could be ddos or spamming emails for the last 6 years and you wouldn't know.

>tfw my dad got some bitcoin miner on his laptop cause he streams way too many sports matches and i forgot to check the new ublock malware lists when i installed it for him
>>
>>53684133
That's running untrusted software.
Use NoScript and problem solved.
Also, vulnerability in a browser is rare, it's mostly plugins that malware gets through. Don't use plugins and problem solved.
>>
>>53684425
>just don't use software, and you won't get software
Huh.
>>
>>53683916
I do malware research and it gets more and more obfuscated as time goes on.
A lot of viruses nowadays have environmental monitoring, and won't do anything if it thinks it's being watched. So it's hard to detect, and determine what they do.

>vulnerability in a browser is rare,
yeah because both sides are pushing harder than other areas

Are there any scary HTML viruses I should be aware of?
>>
>>53683742
They sort of already have this technology, designed for fighter pilots to have complete control over their craft.
>>
>>53683818
How does webroot work for this?
>>
>>53684771
If there's no new process showing up at any time, what are the odds of being infected anyway?

i sometimes dream about getting a virus that is doing all kinds of crazy shit, but i never really got one irl.
>>
>>53683916
Yahoo. I can't seem to get rid of whatever makes my google searches redirect to yahoo searches or get rid of a yahoo search homepage. It's why I just had to uninstall Google Chrome altogether.

>Why can't people just not click dumb shit?
They don't know not to. Internetwise most people are still kids.

>What some common misconceptions about viruses.
"If you don't browse suspicious sites, there is no danger."

>One misconception I noticed is that a lot of people think viruses can do more than they are capable of. Like I am sure there are bad viruses but a lot of them are more like annoyances. Am I correct in this thinking?
Yes. I mean, technically, Viruses could totally rekt your hardware and destroy your OS etc. but about mid 00s malware writers finally figured out that there is more profit in logging user input and even more in decrypting the mostly non-backed up user directories and ransom the shit out of users.
>>
>>53683898
That the suites are botnets, enery drains and attack vectors too is another story.

> copy program other over program
