Why don't you use full disk encryption?
>>
>>53681878
because i have a big fat cock and don't care who knows it
>>
>>53681878
There's nothing on my disk worth encrypting. It's totally not worth the effort.

Because I need to appease my NSA overlords with my porn.

Because nothing gets out of my encrypted /home anyway.

Because I'm not a terrorist or a pedo.

Because I have nothing to hide.
>>
I work on my notebook and I have to commute everyday, I have few projects, papers and notes in my /home.

I have old amd cpu and it would take several minutes to turn on with encrypted hdd.
>>
>>53681878
I just don't store any personal info on my phone.
>>
why do i
>>
>>53681932
Why do you have your facebook/twitter wall private? Can I get your name?
>>
Because honestly there's nothing in there that's worth hiding enough to justify the performance sink. I did it for a while when I was in college and paranoid about my roommates going through my shit or something but after a while I just kind of felt like it was really a waste of my time, OS password will deter that kind of casual snooping, and anything more serious would probably be able to coerce the password out of you anyway so what's the point?
>>
>>53682779
>facebook/twitter wall private
But they're not senpai, public
>>
because I don't have child porn and pirated hentai on my computer like everyone else on /g/

How much does full disk encryption slow down performance? What if you have one of those fancy HDDs with built-in encryption?

I do. LUKS encrypted disks with ZFS (raidz2) pool on top. Bitlocker on gaming PC (Just wanted to try it) and Filevault on Fruitbox. I don't even have anything worth hiding.

You keep all your financial records and tax forms unencrypted?

I don't even store those haha, my mom does

It's really easy. Once you set it up you can just forgot about it. Even on Windows.
>>
>>53685284
most of those are going to be digital anyways you idiot. not to mention, if someone steals your computer most arent even going to try and break a windows password.
>>
I never felt the use for using full disk encryption. For certain parts of my hard drive, such as swap and cache, I'd rather have performance. I see no point in encrypting my OS. When I'm on a laptop, the constant encryption would eat away the battery life too.

I just encrypt things in a folder level. Seems like the better method.
>>
>>53682856
They can't. Take it from someone who's had a full on run in with the police, it's a good idea to hide anything and everything.

What a lot of people forget is that it's not actually about what you're guilty of, it's about what can be proven in court. If you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and they find the right kind of shit on your computer, or in your home to try and make a case, you can get seriously fucked.

Trust me on this. FDE is not that hard to do, and it's extremely beneficial.
>>
I'm not worried about child porn like you are. Just delete them anon.

Is bitlocker on windows 10 good enough with full disk encryption?
>>
>>53687073
Full disk encryption is useless if you use Windows. In order for the data to be accessible it needs to be decrypted which means Windows has access to it.

>>53683218
Assuming the parts in your computer were made within the last 10 years the loss in performance is not noticeable.

>>53686752
It is unnecessary to crack the password since it can be bypassed simply by accessing the data from outside the installed operating system.

Same reason we shouldn't request every fucking site to be secure: because it doesn't fucking matter for most things.

Paranoidfag dumbfucks that think their entire computer should be encrypted and inane, useless sites need to be secure are fucking stupid.

Mostly laziness.

>>
>>53687507
people dont steal computers in hopes in getting fucking tax information. they steal them to sell them.
>>
>>53681878
Because with FDE, any corruption on your drive might render all your data unreadable. That's a pretty fucking big risk to take for no real gain

except what goes into memory.

lets be fair, ram rarely fails, but fucking completely covering it up in something that cannot be removed is a stupid fucking idea. especially since when you cover up any sort of airflow that 'rarely fails' statement goes out the fucking window.

I do because my computer leaves my house frequently and I don't want some dindu getting my data when he steals my computer.

And? What if they do? What if the person that gets it next gets nosy?

>FDE

I do though. Also why is that picture turning me on?
>>
>home server has all its disks encrypted with dm-crypt/LUKS
>have a root terminal open all the time

they are encrypted but I kinda wonder why I bothered. If a three-letter agency breaks down my door I've already fucked up big time just by letting them find out who I am
>>
>>53681878
Unauthenticated, disk block level encryption is not really useful for much more than not making headlines if you lose an unpowered laptop in a taxi. It doesn't protect you from tampering, having your laptop snatched when it's powered and generally suffers from lots of subtle weaknesses due to the need to be transparent to users.

What you really want is probably want is filesystem level encryption, like ext4's new feature: http://blog.quarkslab.com/a-glimpse-of-ext4-filesystem-level-encryption.html
>>
>>53686866
Does bitlocker work? Assuming it's not the FBI on you but just local police?
>>

did you encrypt pre or post investigation.

Make some effort, will you?

I use a lot of passwords in the first place. Full disk encryption isn't necessary to me. I'm too lazy and I'm almost positive no one would be able to bypass the locks I've set just to enter the BIOS.
>>
>>53690909
They could just pull the BIOS battery, and you would be fucked.
>>
>>53690909

>Open machine
>Remove hard drive
>Take a shot at resetting the BIOS while you're there for shits and giggles

Admittedly your mom isn't likely to rip open your PC but still
>>
>>53691128
>>53691130

Dammit. Well. Alright. Guess you really can't maintain privacy/freedom unless you encrypt.
>>
>>53691151
I understand though.

Personally, I would like to have a encrypted file, so maybe a specific folder would be encrypted or some shit. I don't want a full disk encryption, I wish I could do the same with my phone.
>>
LUKS on my laptop. no need to encrypt my desktop machine, it's running windows anyways.
>>
>>53687507
>Full disk encryption is useless if you use Windows. In order for the data to be accessible it needs to be decrypted which means Windows has access to it.

And this is where bitlocker is handy
>>
>>53681878
I do though

If I have Windows 10 installed on one partition, and Ubuntu on another, what would be the best way to encrypt the entire hard drive?
>>
>>53681878
Because it rapes my SSD. Encrypting /home or similar is good enough.
>>
I encrypt my home folder in Ubuntu, not sure if that's equivalent but I think it is
>>
>>53691975
Use Bitlocker to encrypt your Windows partition and dm-crypt/LUKS to encrypt your Ubuntu partition. If your Ubuntu install uses a swap partition you’ll want to encrypt it too, or it might spill your key to disk, rendering your encrypted / useless.

Your boot loader/EFI system partition and partition table in general will need to be in plaintext in order to boot, so your disk won’t wholly encrypted. Still, with a good password you should be able to stop people from snooping your confidential data provided they didn’t get ahold of your computer when it was powered on/sleeping.

I think you can enable Bitlocker in-place, but you can’t with dm-crypt. If you just want to protect your user data without blowing away your existing partition, you can look into eCryptfs. It’s an encrypted filesystem which is stacked on top of a normal filesystem instead of below like dm-crypt. It won’t encrypt file metadata like dm-crypt, but it might be good enough. Googling for information on Ubuntu returned an outdated cesspool, but you might be able to get some hints from this article: http://www.howtogeek.com/116032/how-to-encrypt-your-home-folder-after-installing-ubuntu/ DESU, the Arch wiki is probably your best bet. If you do go for eCryptfs, remember to encrypt any swap partitions with dm-crypt. Since swap is ephemeral, blowing it away shouldn’t be a problem.

Do keep in mind, none of this will protect your computer from tampering, only offline attacks. ATM, the only secure consumer OSes are ChromeOS and iOS. Joy.
>>
>>53691151
that's right, basically anyone who can into computer more than browsing facebook can pull data from a hdd that isn't encrypted
os/bios passwords do not matter when you have access to the physical drives, only encryption can protect the data

Great idea there, mate. Just use Microsoft' OWN disk encryption and you can be 100% sure they won't be able to decrypt your data.
