They are both cancer but signal at least is opensource.
The only real free as in freedom and secure option to communicate is to use Conversation and a XMPP server of your choice (I use ejabberd) hosted at your own place.
Everything else is a fucking compromise or even worse a fucking botnet.

Use a decent Linux distro and automatize the whole installation and update procedures with ansible.
In years I don't remember a single time I had to manually fiddle with the thing because of a broken update or anything else.
