Welcome to /flt/, we are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Hm, I added debug to the end of the line, after the modprobe.blacklist command, and now I'm just getting a black screen with a blinking cursor. Was 'debug' supposed to come before modprobe or something?

>>
>>53661348
I don't think it really makes a difference, you also don't need the modprobe.blacklist anymore because that missing firmware obviously has nothing to do with your problem.

No, just checked, doesn't seem to matter where I place debug on the line, it gives me the same black screen with blinking cursor

Which POPULAR distros are the most FOSS? Debian?

I know with Debian it includes no propreitary drivers or anything by default, yet RMS still doesn't like them. Would RMS force them to completely remove the nonfree repo, which must be manually activated, to comply with FSF standards?

and

**3 printk messages dropped ** [incremental numbres here] rt something something

and

[incremental number here] rt2800pci something something failing to load

Sorry, I can't quite make it out, everything is scrolling very fast

Not really timeout, I meant that spot where you encounter the problem you're having of linux not doing anything anymore(nothing else happens).

Attempt 3

I asked this in a previous thread and it didn't get answered

How do I fix the bspwm preselection? Mine shows up as a giant single colored box that covers half of my currently focused window. I want it so that it only highlights the edge/border of the currently focused window, also how do I change the color? also pic related to my problem
>>
>>53661512
Hm, well, even before this testing began and I just booted normally without adding any extra lines - it never seemed to stop. I must have left it on for about half an hour and it was still scrolling through incremental numbers of the same messages saying rt2800pci.bin was failing to load

If it is of any help, Debian explicitly warned me about rt2800pci in the graphical installer and asked me if I had it on some removable media to install it. I didn't, so I just continued on with the install. The first time it booted without any problems. (My computer has both an ethernet connection and a wireless adaptor in case the ethernet isn't available for some reason, so I just used the ethernet for the netinstall)

It's until now that it's giving me issues

So unfortunately I don't see it stopping anytime soon...

I have seen the scrolling suddenly pause for a second or two before continuing, something about falling back to user? and then continuing with the same lines we've been seeing. But I can't quite make it out because it happens very fast.

It's up to the [844]-ish increment now.

>>
>>53661685
I think that's done in the binary blob, your typical free driver is usually loaded for a class of devices and probes for the specific one.

Guy above with wireless card for example has a rt2860 and the rt2800(also the rt2x00) drivers probe for which specific card it has, then function based on that.

>no longer supported
Try to find an older version? Maybe the wayback machine has it or nouveau might support it.
>>
>>53661720
Don't know what to tell ya, try one more boot with every thing you can think of blacklisted.

Reason I want to hack a new driver is because the newest one has Mir support, the older ones don't because Nvidia are Jewish niggers

Yeah...I guess I'll try reinstalling. What a bummer

But how can I add the drivers during the firmware during the install if I don't have it? Download them from my laptop, copy them to a USB and plop it in during install?

Hello /g/

I have been asked to set up a mail server and a file backup server.

The backup portion would involve the user making up some data, saving it on the user box.
This then syncs to the server where this acts as a backup.

The email portion has 4 addresses for incoming mail, along with 4-5 user address.
Say client 1 sends a request for product A, this then needs to be sent to 1 or 2 user addresses, or more.

Basically I think it needs title-based forwarding.

That's the gist of it, what kind of server would be best? The guy already has a box at someone's house, but it's proven unreliable with crashes, it runs Windows Server of some kind.
I would relocate it to the owner's office.

I've always thought that a VPS would be good, but I've read it really depends on nodemates and other factors.

How can I set up a reliable home server for this guy?

What software should I employ?
I've read about iredmail for the email portion

I thought sshfs or sftpfs (iirc) for the backup portion.

How do I make sure this thing won't die on its own, would a UPS be advisable?

Thank you.

Can you see any wireless interface with "ip link"? If so your driver is loaded.

Did you need to modprobe anything manually for it to happen? If not, udev loaded it automatically and you don't need to do anything else.

>>

You can't pass mount options like that, use -o. And for the type use mount.<type> or -t. You also likely don't want ro(read only).

sudo mount.ntfs-3g /dev/<disk> /mnt

>I generally do not connect to web sites from my own machine, aside from a few sites I have some special relationship with. I usually fetch web pages from other sites by sending mail to a program (see git://git.gnu.org/womb/hacks.git) that fetches them, much like wget, and then mails them back to me. Then I look at them using a web browser, unless it is easy to see the text in the HTML page directly. I usually try lynx first, then a graphical browser if the page needs it (using konqueror, which won't fetch from other sites in such a situation).

It's the same. The real terminal is the black console with no GUI. A terminal emulator emulates this so that you can use it from a GUI environment. They all do any colors, you have to choose the colors yourself or you can use a colorscheme that already exists like solarized or something.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU

What the fuck is wrong with the desktop thread? A lot of their desktops don't look like it could even be called "ricing," it's just a plain pastal background with anime images randomly. my friend and i are making a Debian based Beowulf cluster and are installing the OS on every node
does anyone know/have a guide on how to set up Network booting?
>>
I'm the dual booting Debian and Windows guy, I'm back.

I reinstalled Debian with the non-free-firmware-included netinstall. It stli didn't include the needed rt2860.bin, so I just plopped in the required .deb package with a USB during installatoin. Everything went well.

Now that I rebooted the machine I'm getting a similar issue to before. I boot into Debian, and I get a black screen with a blinking cursor.

If I change the line in the boot process to remove 'quiet', I get:

 IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready
[drm] Enabling RC6 states: RC6 on, RC6p off, RC6pp off
e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: Rx/Tx
IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth0: link becomes ready

And then just a blinking cursor.

The only way to get out of this is CTRL+ALT+DEL, which reboots back into GRUB.

How can I troubleshoot this? It's getting a bit old. At least I'm not lacking firmware anymore, apparently...
>>
>>53663716
And I should mention - right after the install, the initial boot went well. I even posted from IceWeasel there a while back. But after rebooting, I get this problem.

Starting to get a bit desperate, send help

I'm experiencing some strange graphical glitches on my netbook running Lubuntu.

Parts of the desktop will suddenly look "glitched" and unreadable. Sometimes mousing over them or scrolling the page will get rid of the artifacts. The ones at the bottom right by the tray won't. I can't really pin down any behavior which causes them to appear, they just do so randomly

Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is

is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Hey guys. Once again, guy who was dual booting Windows and Debian here.

I found the source of my problems: apparently I was completely fucking up X when I was installing my NVIDIA non-free drivers without configuring them properly, causing the system to complete shit the bed when rebooting.

Right now I'm on a fresh (third) install of Debian trying to do things right for once. I also made a backup live USB in case I make a mistake again, so at least I can have access to internet and my files while fixing it.

Lesson learned: Never just blindly follow advice from random forum users (I read one about installing NVIDIA drivers that was just completely wrong and ended up fucking myself over because of blind trust.)
