Welcome to /flt/, we are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

I have to learn unix/linux for a job in cyber security I was offered. Which distro should I use and what's the best way to learn it? I'd also be working with splunk/hunk if that helps.

Kali Linux is what many use for cyber-security type things. It might be a little rough for your first distro though.

Maybe try some flavor of Ubuntu first?

Hey /flt/, I'm the guy from earlier who was looking to dual-boot his PC with Windows and Debian.

I shrunk my partitions, backed up my stuff and got everything ready. Now I'm finally at the install screen, and about to do the partitioning manually - which I'm pretty intimidated by, I don't want to fuck anything up. I've never done manual partitioning before.

Would any kind soul around here be willing to guide me through it?

My goals:
>Get core system files into SSD's Free Space (first drive that appears, with 64.4 GB)
>Get volatile and home files into HDD's Free Space (second drive that appears, with 644.2 GB)
>Make sure not to touch anything on the Windows partitions

What about the swap partition? How large should it be?

I've read things about having to configure it a specific way so you can hibernate, go into Windows, come back and have the session be saved as before.

If I have 8GB of RAM, should the swap partition also be 8GB?

The old rule of thumb used to be twice your memory, although that comes from the days of 512MiB and less. If you have 4/8 GiB you likely won't need a swap file.

How large should /var/ and /tmp/'s partition be?

/var depends on the system, on a desktop it shouldn't take more than a few MiB(if logs are rotated). 512MiB or 1 GiB at the most.

/tmp barely contains shit nowadays and shouldn't occupy any hard drive space, it should be mounted tmpfs(in memory).

And with 8GiB or memory, fuck swap. You won't ever use it.
>>
>>53655643
okay, and is there any point in separating /boot from / in the SSD or should I just do / there?
>>
>>53655643
>And with 8GiB or memory, fuck swap. You won't ever use it.
I have 4GiB and I never use it. I top out at about 2 or so. Yet my swap is still being used, at around 500MiB, for some reason.
>>
>>53655664
/boot is usually separated to be on a non-journaled filesystem (e.g. ext2 instead of ext4). This is because the journal serves little purpose in that context and older bootloaders(e.g. legacy grub) didn't support it.

You don't need to make a separate /boot partition at all, you won't gain shit from it.

>>
>>53655670
Since you specified a swap file, linux is just storing memory in it. Linux would be fine without it but it's shoving things it doesn't need into it.

For example the state of a process that hasn't been scheduled in a while, linux sees no reason to keep that in memory.

Maany package managers(e.g. pacman) need you to manually(or use a third-party tool) to clean it.

- wanting to downgrade packages, though needing to do so is very rare

na, they still work, it's old PKGBUILD's that might not work due to changes, but built packages don't contain PKGBUILD's, just some basic details, maybe a pre/post-install shell script, and the files, in a typical "just copy them to /" layout

What do I do to get rid of the logs, and what do I do to be able to limit their size or something?

There doesn't to be a reason for the log files to be so huge already.

So I want to update my Nvidia drivers to the beta version because it supports Mir and Wayland and I wanted to try them out on the 16.04 beta

But my fucking card is literally only a generation out from the ones listed so it doesn't look like it will be supported in the beta installer, is there a way to trick the installer to make it install the drivers anyway?

Weird, after checking status, When I tried it now it promoted me to input my root password(again) to change something in here. I rebooted and it worked. Well, thanks I guess.

I'm double checking if my Windows is in UEFI.

My motherboard DISTINCTLY says 'UEFI BIOS', not 'BIOS', not 'UEFI' when I boot it up.

>Open File Explorer and navigate to the following folder: C:\Windows\Panther.
>In the folder named 'Panther' you will see a text file titled setupact.log. The file will automatically open in Notepad.
>Once you have opened setupact.log, press Ctrl+F to bring up the 'Find box' and search for an entry named 'Detected BootEnvironment'.
>Once you find 'Detected Boot Environment', you will notice the words 'BIOS' or 'UEFI' mentioned as follows:
>Callback_BootEnvironmentDetect: Detected boot environment: BIOS
OR
>Callback_BootEnvironmentDetect: Detected boot environment: UEFI

But there is no setupact.log in my Panther folder.

I'm just going to try some other distro and see what it says

Changing permission can take some time.

So I 'make a mount point', according to some Ubuntu forum.
http://askubuntu.com/questions/296331/how-to-mount-a-hard-disk-as-read-only-from-the-terminal

>sudo mkdir /media/2tb
This is the 'name' that it gets mounted as, and location where I can find it? Right? It's in 'media' and named as '2tb'?

>sudo mount -o ro /dev/sda1 /media/2tb
but what's the /dev/sda1 part? I suppose it is the actual disk location, so does it refer to the 'location' part in folder properties? Mine is /media/asko right now.

Because you haven't autismed your config yet. Config won't beat madVR by default.

Kodi can fetch images (posters, fanart, actors) and it places them to the file's folder - this at least in Windows.

And I'm going to use external player for Kodi, not the one Kodi comes with, thus the MPV installation.
