eudev may be a fork, but it's a start. There's mdev and others.
If you want a bit more adventure and/or control, dig around deeper to find things like hotplug2. Take it and develop it further. Just because we have udev doesn't mean we need to make our replacement look/act/smell like it. (put another way: there's more than one way to skin a cat, and if you really want to get off the crazy train, you need to be willing to look at the problem differently)
