Hey /g/ im building what would be a 2005 gaming pc. it currently has a Pentium 4, what would you guys reccomend as a better cpu but not too new.

>inb4 i7
>>
Why are you doing that ?

+ Just buy a mac.
>>
Dell do pretty good gaming PCs
>>
>>53650532
Nostalgia, and macs are shit for old games and games in general
>>
ive been trying to find a PCI graphics card and its blowing my mind how difficult it is to find a decent one

and when you do, its marketed to hipsters and costs like 500$
>>
>>53650644
In 2005 wasn't AGP pretty common? It should be easy to find a Geforce card on ebay that runs on AGP. Should be able to find one for like $20-30.
>>
>>53650755

He probably has a dell dimension which lacked AGP and PCI-E.
>>
>>53650644
Im buying a radeon 5770 or maybe a HD5750
>>
Fuck, I was using a AMD Athlon 64 3000+ in my 2005 rig to play Half Life 2.
>>
Move it up 2 years and you'll have something truly special.

Q6600 + SLI 8800.
>>
Pretty sure my mobo is fried, I've got no signal on any monitor I use, I've swapped gpu's Ive used integrated graphics, I've booted with and without ssd and no signal on any monitor. I'm pretty sure my windows installation is okay because when the harddrive is in I can hear Windows start up sounds through my speakers, and without harddrive it Post's because I can hear the CPU fan speeds increase. I've got a mini itx tower and 300 to spend what should I buy

PCI graphics cards were slow as shit even in 2005. I know, I used an 8400GS for some time. That's about the most recent thing you can get in a PCI version, btw.

Or move it back a few years and look for a Voodoo 5. Those came in PCI. They're collector's items though so you'll pay more for it.

Pentium 4HT at 3.4GHz for best performance. Cooling I'd go for a Celeron 1.8GHz, but that's my opinion.

Radeon HD4550 is your only choice for PCIe video from this era, better than any of the shit nVidia made in 2005.

>>53650755
No AGP here, and most AGP GeForce cards weren't great.

>>53650644
PCIe or just PCI?
PCIe- Radeon HD4550
PCI- ATi Mach 64GT + Voodoo 2/3.
>>
>>53651945
I wasnt thinking exactly 2005 but i had the idea of an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
>>
>>53652135
Go for Core Duo then (not 2) for era correctness.

>I've done this before, I know what I'm doing

A true 2005 gaming PC would be an AMD Athlon 2600+

Back then is where AMD left Intel for dead when it came to gaming. It wasn't until the core 2s that Intel got ahead.
>>
>>53652160
Athlon 64s kicked Prescott's shit in.

Damn I wish AMD could at least manage to be something resembling competitive these days, Intel's been resting on their laurels for years.
>>
>>53652160

Also, the Ati Radeon x800 xt was top tier graphics card for the time as well. A GeForce 5500 was about mid range.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_Athlon_64_microprocessors
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Pentium_D_microprocessors
Pick a 2005-era chip from either list and go with it.
>>
>>53652244
Geforce 5 series was like 2003, 2005 was the 6 and 7 series.
>>
>>53652153
>>I've done this before, I know what I'm doing
then why did you suggest a mobile CPU for a desktop, dumbass?
>>
>>53652349
Because I've never built a machine past the Pentium 4HT / Athlon 64 x2 era. I know my 2005 systems, not much past it though.
>>
>>53650502
Well simply go for the best cpu that your mobo supports, which i know will not be from current generation of cpu.

Tell me your mobo model and I'll tell you the best cpu for it.
>>
>>53650502
best you could do cpu-wise for 2005 would probably be a 939 athlon 64 x2
