side grading.

The machine isn't going any where, but it's way more power than I use. BAck when I was an insufferable NEET I would dream about having a god tier machine that could run and do literally any consumer based borderline professional based software application.

But now that I have it, and I have a job, and social connections and I'm not in front of it as often I'm like "Fuck"

So I ordered an e6440 which I'm going to tweak out and then dock when I'm home. The machine pictured is going to become a game/file server. I can stream most games to either the e6440 or my tv via shield console.

so main work station will actually be a laptop, that goes with me every where and if I need to do something the laptop can't handle, I'll stream it from the desktop.
>>
>>53649222
sounds cool. Personally a desktop suits me well, but I can see how just streaming to a laptop could be a great alternative. All the power to you mate

>The fact that a 2600k competes and beats a 6600k in some cases is ridiculous
Hardly a fair comparison. Yes the 2600k and a board would be cheaper and perform better in some use cases (and worse in others) but they're different classes, compare it to the 6700k instead (or the 2500k to the 6600k).

If price to your performance is your only concern and you can benefit from hyperthreading then sure the 2600k would be the better choice, if you don't want to go second hand or want newer features then it's not so great.

I've played the price to performance game before and had some fun slapping two old Xeons on a dual socket board and stopping CPUs that literally cost 5 times as much as both of mine together, but it's not without its disadvantages.

iirc the 7970 is supported by os x but support isn't great. i don't believe amd releases os x drivers independent of apple like nvidia does.

nvidia's 7xx series is mostly supported out of the box. 9xx series are supported via nvidia's independent driver.

tonymac appears to only recommend nvidia cards:
http://www.tonymacx86.com/building-customac-buyers-guide-march-2016.html#Graphics_Cards

mostly because nvidia and apple offers great support for them.

chipset and cpu wise you should be fully supported. sandy if fully supported. sound should be if its realtek.

it might be easier to setup mac os x in a virtual machine if you just don't want to do amateur software development.

I have the Z97-AR. Been holding my 4690k clocked to 4.6ghz @ 1.3v with no problems or hiccups since I bought it. And sound is fine unless you're an audiophile. Which means you'd have a dedicated setup not reliant on the motherboard's audio chip anyway.

for Intel builds, pretty much any company will work fine although I tend to prefer Asus because their BIOS layout is so much easier to work with. Right behind them would be Asrock, then MSI.

I wouldn't touch Gigabyte with a 10 foot pole, ECS is dead to me, and I'm waiting on Super-Micro to release something relevant. They had Z series motherboards that faded into obscurity because no one sold them. You had to buy them online and they were priced way beyond what they should have been given their specs.

People have asked in the past why I don't have a fury X. This build was specifically for 4k gaming (which is why I am getting another 980ti) and the 4gb VRAM on the fury X would really hold me back. I have no company allegiances, all I care about is power really. I wanted to get an AMD card for DX12 since they have their shit together with the async shaders but there are no cards out there besides the Titan X, 980ti, and 390x crossfire for 4k gaming. I'm contemplating getting the Fury X2 but who knows when that will come out and with new cards on the market everything is really kind of overwhelming.

Sup /g/uts, I thought this would be a good place to post this; how do people decide which power supplies are good, and specifically, how good or bad certain series of power supplies from the same manufacturer are relative to each other? Like the corsair VS series being inferior to the CX in turn inferior to the HX etc. ?

And is there anything wrong about getting a non-80+ rated power supply if I don't care about the power efficiency and have proper cooling, AND have the PSU connected to a good UPS which can shield it from electrical fuckery?inconsistency or surges

What would you choose if you had to pick between these two?

http://www.thermaltake.com/products-model_Specification.aspx?id=C_00001966

http://www.corsair.com/en-us/cx750-80-plus-bronze-certified-power-supply

The TT one has a 730W while the Corsair has 750W. The Corsair is more expensive by about $6. However, the TT one, although lower in wattage, is semi-modular while the Corsair is non-modular. The TT is less efficient at 100% load than the Corsair (bronze) by ~2% so whatever. The TT also has a 14cm fan instead of the 12cm one on Corsair. Those are the only differences I noticed. The CX also has:
>4-Pin Peripheral Connector: 4
>PCI-E Connector: 4

So 4x4PCI-E connectors so 16 in total right? My motherboard/cpu needs 6, and I'm planning to have myself a CF eventually with two 390x's which would need at least 8 (but probably 16 -- I'm not sure). Semi-modular makes more sense doesn't it?

Even worth a 390x CF I've used the power calculator (http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator at 100% cpu tdp +24h use) and at MOST my system would consume 710W (in CF) so the TT semi-modular supply would still be a viable, cheaper, option. Really lost. The only problem would be if the Tt doesn't deliver its rsted wattage. Should I save up some more andget a more reliable brand i.e. antec, xfx, etc?
>>
>>53677171
neither, they're both fire hazards
also you're making no sense on the 4x4pcie, it's
4 6+2 PCIE things and a 8pin CPu connector
