My knowledge about consumer graphics cards and motherboards lags a bit, but here's my problem:
I want to run as many 1080p monitors as possible aiming for the lowest cost. So I was wondering, how many outputs can a graphics card can give, and how many graphics cards can I shove to a motherboard?
I know that there are MBs with like 10 PCIe ports and some graphics cards that cost 3k and offer 10 outputs, but that would put each output at 300$, while I could get the same thing with a 30$ single output graphics card.
What's the optimal solution? Should I give up and get an entire PC with 2 graphics cards 2 monitors each? Or is it worth stacking a shitload of multi-output graphics cards to a monstrous server motherboard?
How many do you want to run, and what for? A GTX 960 can have 1 x HDMI, 1 x DVI and 3 x DP connected simultaneously, and you can buy DP to dual HDMI adapters. That's 8 screens from one card - fine for Windows desktop, but clearly no good for gaming. Many motherboards will support 3 of these cards, is 24 displays enough?

Sweet jesus fuck
Would they even have the ram?
It really depends or what you want to do on the monitors.
There's a big difference between 5 monitors that are all internet browsers, vlc, text editors, ect vs 5 monitors that are doing games, rendering, ect.

This guy is right.
What are you doing? Stock market? Video encoding? Class rooms? Surveillance cameras? Porn?
edit: Nevermind, I figured it out.

get the oculus rift and have infinite monitors

Just buy as many of these as you want plus a good graphics card solely for your main display.

8 displays x 1920 x 1080 x 24 bits per pixel = 398131200 bits, or just under 50mb of RAM. Graphics cards have shit loads of memory nowadays, it's only if you're caching textures for gaming etc that you use any serious amount of it. This would work fine for desktop applications but would shit it's pants if you tried to play fallout.
Just get a matrox C900 op. 9 1080p displays off one card.

its just has to keep count of 4 vertices per screen
I have a 960 and despite its many ports its limited to 4 screens at once tho
