Welcome to /flt/, we are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

In the next hour or so I'll be dual booting Debian into my Windows desktop.

I was meaning to ask you guys:

What precautions should I take for my SSD and HDD partitions? Will the guided install work fine or is it better if I do things manually?

I already shrunk my SSD to have an unallocated 60GB partition to install Debian on. I'm in the process of backing up my HDD personal data on an external HDD, then I'll be resizing that appropiately to put my personal data on Debian and leave Windows just for games.

Was planning to have my home directory and other volatile stuff on the HDD, with the core install in the SSD.

I made the Boot USB with Rufus on the GPT FAT32 setting, since I installed Windows with GPT as well.
>>
What's the best Linux distro for beginners? I'm planning to install on one of my old laptops(not too old tho). I tried ubuntu before but I want to try other.
>>
>>53646546
Install openjdk, compile the source with javac, run the .class with java. If you have multiple java classes, use jar.

Or just use an IDE.
>>
>>53646771
Try another flavor of Ubuntu (default Ubuntu is pretty shit since it has Unity).

If it's an old laptop you might want to try Xubuntu or Lubuntu

If it's not that old (less than 5 years old) you'll be fine with any distro. Check out Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu MATE, Linux Mint (derived from Ubuntu, with Cinammon desktop), etc..

Anything other than an Ubuntu flavor/derivative might be too much for a beginner.
>>
>>53646693
guided might fuck you up if you're dual booting and splitting between drives. It sounds like you have a good plan. I would recommend putting your /var/ on the hdd if possible to prolong your ssd speed/life.

Hey fellow brothers, i have an issue that is bothers me since i put Xubuntu on my laptop.

I really, really want to start using linux but one of my main activities on my free time its to watch my channels on youtube.

Well, I cant make youtube it work on linux…its laggy and out of sync….

i google the issue online but all the answers I got where from 2012!

I have the goodies installed, I have flash, I disble html5…

I cant use this OS for one of the most common activities of all!

Can anyone show me the right path here?

Good idea, but you got to do your partitioning manually.
>>

Read my post mang. Ubuntu by default uses Unity, which is kind of shit according to most people (including myself, but that's just preference)

Try Ubuntu GNOME, Kubuntu, or Linux Mint for a beginner-friendly distro for not-ancient hardware.

>>

Download Ubuntu mini iso.

Install it - and pick last option from packages list "custom packages"

You'll just have the terminal and from that point you can install w/e - full desktop environments with packages, full environments without recommended software or only core parts of desktop environments.
>>
>>53646810
flash has not had support on linux since 2011(?). Flash is going to fuck you up more than HTML5 will. Firefox/iceweasel/chromium should work just fine on it, but if you're having troubles still, you can get youtube downloader and pipeline it into mpv/vlc. You also might want to check on your graphics driver. The ideal driver might be under non-free which is likely not enabled by default

LXDE for ease of use and i3 when you want to focus on specific work - you can switch between them with a simple log out.

Also remove fedora and get ubuntu mini iso - install basic core without any package then install lxde without recommended software, pick w/e you need that is very very lightweight and install i3.

>tfw no foobar2k for Linux

This is such a goddamn travesty. I setup my old computer with Linux Mint and got it all setup thinking "aside from video games, I can do it all!" but then I realized with no foobar, I can't listen to my psf/mini2sf/spc/kss video game music collections.

before somebody asks what those are, I'll just tell you. They're like midi's ripped from the games, but you can download components for foobar that emulate the sound chips from old video game consoles and play back the music as if you're playing the games. They even can be played to loop endlessly.

Sorry for spoonfeeding instead of helping you figure it out on your; needed a change of pace from what I was doing and seemed wasteful to let it rot since I wrote it and all. I'm no wizard but it works:

lilspurdo() { [ -n "$1" ] && arg="$1" || arg="$(cat /dev/stdin)"; printf '%s\n' "$arg" | sed 's/kek/geg/g'; }

$ echo kekekekekekekek | lilspurdo

So my dad is a relatively experienced Network IT guy(who hates all OS), and I usually go to him for questions about computers.

I told him I was considering Debian because I used ubuntu as a kid and the DE in Debian looks similar to what ubuntu had back then(was it gnome 2?).

He says Debian is a lot "harder" than Ubuntu. I assumed this meant fixing problems. I could just google stackoverflow, but what do you guys think? Last time I checked Debian had a live cd with an installer.

I'd like to point out that my dad has used slackware, ubuntu, debian, and every version of windows(server and desktop). He's not the most familiar with linux, I think he switched over to some linux distro to learn it like 8 years ago and never went back(until last week).

Another question(sorry), what is the least frustrating operating system overall? (it would be for my dad, i'm a neet who has time to fix dumb stuff)

Unless you do a net install, you should run "sudo apt-get update && dist-upgrade" after you are done installing.

The issue for Ubuntu and its spins is that by 16.04 it stopped supporting proprietary drivers, meaning you're going to get stuck with OSS or AMDGPU.

if you want a more traditional DE and dont want to use an ubuntu spinoff, maybe antergos or manjaro would be up your alley. they work OOTB and antergos is fully DE agnostic too.

>Another question(sorry), what is the least frustrating operating system overall? (it would be for my dad, i'm a neet who has time to fix dumb stuff)

If he's used to unix networking maybe PC-BaSeD. it's rock stable, comes with his choice of DE, and is great for basic use with csh, which he should be used to.
>>
>>53650297

You'd have to build a custom kernel to get the best chance of having it work with ubuntu. that or switch completely to a Rolling release. see Phoronix.com for details senpai.

Was hoping to see if anyone dealt with a similar issue and found a decent solution:
I have been using samba as a quick solution to transfer files between Winshit and various GNU/Linux distros on a LAN

When I transfer from client to remote smb I am able to saturate my gigabit connection which is great

My problem arises when I want to transfer from smb share to smb share

Let's say I log into two smb shares on different hosts all on my Windows machine. I want to simply drag and drop to transfer files between the two shares. Instead of directly transferring from smb to smb however the transfer is routed through my client which slows the transfer down to about 140mbit.

Is there any way to not have my transfer routed through the GUI client I am using to do my organizing? If all else fails I will just mount the samba shares and use the command line.
Searching the web hasn't been as helpful

Honestly, WINE works on most Windows games. Some games even have versions that work on Linux natively. You don't actually have to virtualize windows or dual boot. Good Old Games is a good place for finding Linux stuff.

Then why choosing GNU/Linux at all?

You should switch in the first place for freedom, since this is the whole point.

Ofc you are allowed to have bad habits and hurt yourself with nonfree games and stuff, we do it all sometimes, but if you don't care about your freedom, well, just stick to windows.

Well huh. I got audio to work by adding myself to the "audio" group. It was a permission problem, which is weird since I've never had that problem before. The Arch wiki says the audio group is outdated, I'm guessing that means awesome is just outdated then? My only guess is that they purposely made the DE not reliant on systemd, which cause people that initialize X with systemd to have problems.
>>
>>53652341

Meh, telling people to go back to Windows isn't really functional, instead we _should_ make users aware why they should care about freedom.

>>53652618
It's not a solution to install any Windows version, since at least 7 and 8 get Telemetry via updates. Turning the updates off? If you enjoy albanian virus, just go ahead. Using 7-8 means choosing between Spyware or Malware. Next to this Microsoft is part of NSA's PRISM program, please check out, maybe on Wikipedia, what PRISM is and what it does.

My suggestion: Two different computers or two different hard discs. One for your real computing, one for games. Like the other anon said, it's not easy to set up a Windows VM with a working passthrough to your hardware, but also this is possible, if you have some time.
>>

Try re-installing and selecting your installation partion carefully. Make sure you don't try to install to Swap and that there's enough space for your Linux and some extra for upgrades!

Swap can't have anything installed to it, so don't try. It's still important as a buffer, though, so leave some space in.

Don't make yoru Linux partition th exact same size as your distro as it makes updates and adding to your system hard. At least twice the minimum is wise.

Don't put your back-up in as a partition. Make your back-ups on a regular hard drive used only for back-ups. Also do back-ups once a month to add to and change your files.
