Whatever happened to Electronics with clear colored plastic? back in the late 90's/early 00's, everything did that. the imacs, GBA's, even N64's.

that's a trend I rather miss
>>
only vaporwave enthuasists would want to buy one now

Don't kid yourself, that shit is ugly.

There's a few old design memes I'd like to see come back, like the old IBM industrial design look or even the 70's wood paneling, but clear plastic is not one of them

guess its just a taste thing, because i always liked clear plastic on electronics.
>>
Optical drives killed a lot of the fun of transparent materials.
>>
>>53644799
clear plastic is like PC case windows
both ass
>>
Same thing that happened to case windows. People realized that there's nothing particularly interesting happening inside your case.

Also Apple switched over to glossy white plastic for the iPod because making it fruity translucent plastic would by that time have made it look like a kid's walkie talkie.

Coloured plastics looked shit but I'd love to see a return to fully transparent plastics with a nasty cyberpunk look to shit, like the transparent GameBoy classic from back in the day.

A transparent ultrabook with some sort of clever AIO water cooled solution like you get in water cooled smartphones would be great, too.

Modern optical disk formats don't play well with light pollution, requiring the entire optical drive enclosure to be opaque.

It was replaced with glossy white plastic, which was replaced with aluminum. Now it's time for Apple to choose the next meme material.

apple didn't have anything to do with soft matte black plastic or beige/white SECC steel boxes, so as far as I'm concerned they contributed nothing of interest to PC case design.
>>
>>53646278
they did contribute to the overall soft white "apple aesthetic" that most of their shit follows (and others imitate)

It's odd how so very few smartphones have this, I think it looks fantastic and kind of appeals to the cyberpunk fanboys.
>>
It would suit Apple devices very well since they always try to make their internals so pretty.

Virtually all their products now though are housed in some sort of metal. The only exceptions are their WiFi terminals and Apple TV.

My mechanical keyboard has clear plastic
>>
>>53646387
but that's not what I'm talking about, and not what I care about.
AFAIK, all credit is due to IBM for the aesthetic of its mainframes and desktop systems.
>>
>>53644799
>clear plastic
I dont want my electronics to look like a happy meal toy
>>
fuck guys, I mean one big reason they stopped doing this was because clear plastic made it more evident than ever that you could just bust the machine open and repair/add shit on your own. so much for planned obsolescence, eh?
>>
>>53646278
I was under the impression that we weren't talking about PC cases.
>>
I design cases for all kinds of cheap electronics. We tend to stay away from clear plastic not only for aesthetic reasons, but also because scratches are easily visible on all kinds of cheap clear plastic. They would easily get damaged in shipping from China . Also such cases and bodies easily show the bad soldiering on the PCB , not well aligned resistors and capacitors as well as soldiering solution that is not cleaned off the PCB .
>>
>Whatever happened to Electronics with clear colored plastic?

9/11. A kid would walk into class with this >>53646391 and some teacher would freak out thinking it was a bomb.

A white kid would get 20 years. A black kid would get shot. A Muslim kid would meet the president and visit NASA.

imacs aren't easy to disassemble though. I didn't even bother taking the top part off because of the crt tube and the electrocution risk

>tfw apple ditched that sexy case
>>
>>53646644

Apple pisses me off because there machines are either incredibly simple to get into and repair (i.e. non-Retina MacBook Pro; aluminum towers) or a complete fucking nightmare (Retina MacBooks; most iMacs of any vintage with a few notable exceptions).

It's like they have dueling hardware engineers. One is a genius at making computers that are quick and easy to disassemble. The other is a madman who doesn't even want NASA to be able to disassemble his work.
>>
>>53646588
you mean like the one in the OP?
>>
>>53646650
your mistake would be in assuming I find anything about that design interesting

(I have two of those sitting in my garage gathering dust though, because I was thinking of painting them black and reusing them until I realized how utterly useless the mounting points inside were going to be for my purposes)
>>
>>53646644
this is true, but the temptation when you see that one blown cap, knowing it's all that stands between you and several hundred dollars saved? that's a pretty big temptation, man.
