Two questions:
1. How much safer is CM? Is it any more NSA proof than your regular Android?
2. How much improvement/downgrade in term of raw performance?

dont care

>locking yourself out of factory features

CM isn't really safer. If you leave your phone unencrypted and rooted it's pretty vulnerable. Only good reason for CM is to remove GApps
>>
It is safer in the term that It is mostly updated more frequently. For example there are Nightlies which are build by a bot every day from the offical source code. So lets say theres a big gap in the system and a patch is released you probably get this the next or the day after it.

Also themes are kinda nice as for most custom roms. There are some other things but i dont really rely on them.

How's exactly Knox useful? Carrier bloat you can't remove without root?
>>
Only reason to install CM before was for the performance gain but phones are much more capable now; stock Android having features built in, and root + xposed with stock is enough even for customizing.

How exactly is*

Running RR rom based on CM13. The only reason I'm using this rom is because of my galaxy S3 are no longer supported by samsung and touchwiz is shit.

If I were to have any resources, I'd opt for any sony z3 and up series. Dem os already optimised as fuck, no lag whatsoever. I know this because I work at sony and the z3 compact is my toy at the office.

Why would you use a fork of a fork instead of just using CM13?

It's free to a certain degree as long as you don't install Gapps (no Play Store or Google applications). CM still uses binary blobs which can contain backdoors. Samsung is known to have backdoors in their binary blobs.

If you want 100% free phones you'll need to install Replicant which is a fork of CM which only contains free software in every way shape and form. It's the Stallman version of Android basically.

>2. How much improvement/downgrade in term of raw performance?
Depends on your phone. If you have a shitty supported phone or old phone you might encounter downgrades. If you have a well supported phone with specs to match the version of Android you are running, it will most likely give you an improvement.

What about aosp?
>>
It's probably more trusting compared to some random person on xda.

The only reason i'm using cm is to keep receiving security update on my old phone as update no longer released by manufacturer.

Is it backdoor free ? I don't know.

aosp only give you source code right?
>>

because this fork is a spork. with temperature sensors indicating if the food is too hot for your mouth or not.

lots of extra settings that you usually get from xposed, and i hate installing more apps just for a network meter in status bar.

just checked out the replicant website. wifi missing because of non-free firmware. lel

i was really concerned about privacy on my phone. this is what i decided to do, and im pretty happy with it.
i bought a cheap chinkphablet, that (to my disappointment) had a locked bootloader even tho i was supposed to not have.
i disabled all gapps and the chinese botnet apps that came with it, and downloaded replacements from f-droid.
i set up netguard to block internet access from everything, only whitelisting the essentials eg browser and newpipe.

the apps are not for sure leaking information. if the rom is, the info will go to the chinese and not to the NSA.
