I upgraded my laptop for the screen. My T400 would still run anything I throw at it, but the TN display was pretty shit so I upgraded. The main improvements in laptops have been in portability and screen quality, not performance.

If this were a workstation, it would have internal expansion, max out at more than 64 GiB of RAM, have options for Nvidia GPUs, have at least two CPU sockets, and be in a normal tower (or rack-mounted) form factor.
