if i made one myself, would i need some special controller or resistors/limiters, etc...?

i'm not 100% certain what that is
it looks like a panel of LED's with a diffuser for controlled lighting setups

you could probably get similar results using any off-the-shelf LED lamps + a white sheet/paper

thanks, i didn't think to look into construction equipment.

what else you guys got?

work lamps can get pretty bright
i have a couple cheap-ass ones with less leds than that pictured and they light up a small room like it's daytime

if it's for professional photography there's a question of how 'white' the output is, 'white' led's tend to have cooler (more blue) output than other lamp types, so it might be worth considering others as well

i'm not a photographer or anything though, maybe it doesn't matter and whatever difference can be compensated for during editing

Depends on your power source.

powering a lot of leds isn't trivial as you need specific configurations to not blow the first couple of leds with too much current

what's wrong with incandescent bulbs and white umbrellas anyway? throw up some white sheets if diffusion is an issue

the reason OP is expensive is that it's likely at least a little calibrated as far as white balance goes, ever buy some cheap shitty gu10 led bulbs or similar? even the fairly expensive (~£15) bulbs will have extremely varying white balance and the white balance changes with time, it's not ideal for studio photography work

does it ned to be flexible? because 1x1 foot LED panels go for about 40$ on ebay, dx, aliexpress and such

I've been looking at this myself, my (uncomplete) solution atm is 10 of :http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Tanbaby-LED-Strip-light-5630-DC12V-5M-300led-flexible-5730-bar-light-high-brightness-Non-waterproof/32429656371.html or

or 15 of http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Best-Promotion-G4-COB-DC12V-4W-5W-7W-12W-Pure-Warm-White-LED-15-18-30/32570233621.html

But I have a 12V driver already, you can probably do better starting from scratch with a 28 or 36V driver
