Is upgrading to win 10 worth it? I'm on xp atm.
>>
>>53621171
No. Do NOT upgrade to Windows 10 unless you want to be spied on.
Do NOT listen to people here claiming that there are programs to block the spying either, they are SHILLS. There is no way to completely stop the spying.
Either stay on XP or switch to Linux if you want a more modern OS.

Don't bother with windows at all if you're going full autisitc with older versions.

It's the same "botnet" regardless of what version of it - botnet is less intense if you use early versions of windows 7 and never update or connect to internet - otherwise stay away.

So either go with linux and become an autist fuck that wastes his life and probably suicides later on or go with windows 10 enterprise and disable tracing.

Reasons why not:
Caring about bloat (though it's still less bloated than windows)

I don't normally like to post opinions, especially negative ones, on the front page. In this case, I can't resist, as this bastardization of Windows makes me quite angry. Having used every version of Microsoft's operating systems since 1988 (MS-DOS 5.0), this is the first time I truly believe that Microsoft has lost its way. To put it bluntly, Windows 10 is a mish-mash of interfaces, and in some cases borderline deceptive options, mainly to serve Microsoft's dubious ambitions in the mobile device arena, rather than consumers and businesses. It will only serve to further confuse and alienate the average PC user, and hasten the PC's demise. I've used Windows 10 as my daily OS since the Preview back in January 2015, and I can honestly say it seems like one step forward, four steps back when compared to Windows 7.

every windows install that hasn't automatically upgraded to win 10 should be carefully treasured. With XP you should be fine connecting to the internet, but with all versions of windows >=Win7 I recommend never connecting the machine to the net for extended periods of time and making sure the OS is never able to install a single update.

Stupid question but.....
does turning off internet stop win10 from sending out your info through micoshaft's servers or does it presume when you turn the internet on again?

>does turning off internet stop win10 from sending out your info through micoshaft's servers or does it presume when you turn the internet on again?

Depends what you mean with "turning off internet". If you physically pull the ethernet plug out of the machine and made sure your hardware doesn't have some wifi thing, it makes sense to assume the system will not be able to send data out during that period. If you merely disconnect from the network through OS facilities (= network icon in the taskbar), then it makes sense to assume that win10 will still run the connection behind your back for spying (after all, why not?).

Of course it will start sending out data again as soon as you reconnect. Like, duh. It also makes sense to assume that it collects the data you generated while being offline and sends it out when the connection is back. I.e. if you unplug your ethernet when you want to do private/sensitive things like let's say, manage your passwords or take some dick pics with your webcam, it doesn't help to disconnect unless you never ever reconnect again.

>quoting a tinfoil hat liberal shitstain

this counterargument is bad. You need to stop making it.

The framing of your counterargument referencing free speech accepts the basic premise that the only people who have something to hide are "bad people", and that if you're not a bad person then you won't have anything to hide.

You need to engage with this presumption that the only people who have something to encrypt are pedophiles.

The best free speech analogy is not this "hurr I have nothing to say" retarded horse shit, but a defense of hate speech on the basis that the sword that defends good free speech (political dissent, etc...) must necessarily defend objectionable speech. This context means that, yeah, pedophiles use encryption, and we object to that, but we can't defend our need to encrypt things we all agree need to be encrypted without also defending pedophiles.

And that's a shitty trade-off and we all feel bad about it, but it's not ambiguous or up for debate; there's no way we can evaluate this ethical dilemma and end up putting the prosecution of pedophiles and terrorists ahead of our own encryption needs.

If I remember correctly.

LINUX is the way forward, watch some videos on it.

Linux mint and Ubuntu have great online support too!
>>
>>53624936
Interesting. I always took it to mean "just because I have nothing to say, does not mean I do not want the right to say whatever is on my mind". In the same vein, one could say "I don't have anything to hide, but I do not want to give up my right to hide if I choose". Perhaps you read too far into a brief statement, perhaps I should not have been so facetious about such a serious topic, I do not see how it sets a definition of good or bad reasons to hide, only that like free speech, the right to privacy is a fundamental human right, period. Thats how I explain it anyway, and how I view it.

You re on point with what you say though, and I will consider it another arrow in the quiver.

Yes, windows 10 is pretty much spyware. If you have no problem with Microsoft being able to watch everything you do, then it's a fine choice. Windows 10 is actually pretty nice, and comes with a lot of good features.

If you don't like being spied on and want everything you use to be compatible, buy a MacBook Air 11 inch. They're cheap and get the job done. They're also durable and you can connect a monitor if you think the screen is too small for you. I've used Windows, Android, Ubuntu touch, almost every desktop Linux distribution out there. I now have a MacBook and an iPhone. I will never go back. Ignore the Android fanboys, they don't understand what nice things are

It's both philosophically and practically important to be judicious with your language and arguments. On the practical side the reasons are twofold:

1) people might develop a wrong-headed preconception about the use of something like encryption, since nobody at the table challenged that point about it being something only pedophiles use, and

2) if someone destroys a specious argument that you knew wasn't as strong as other "arrows in your quiver" but you threw into the mix anyway, it affects the credibility of the rest of what you say.
>>
>>53625072
>only that like free speech, the right to privacy is a fundamental human right

And privacy is a cornerstone of free speech and free thought.
A person with their life laid bare for scrutinizing eyes doesn't stand a chance against oppression.
ANYONE can have their words and actions taken out of context and used against them until they are torn to shreds and made to look like a monster who's an enemy of the the state/society whatever fill in the blank.
You can shut nearly anyone up with just the threat of revealing the things they did and said in what they thought was a private setting.
You don't have to go and arrest everyone to control society, you just have to make them afraid to be free.
>>
>>53625206

>>
>>53625272
Try osx because anything is better than Windows nowadays, but if you can't adjust to it, then Windows 7 is the next best option.
>>
>>53625290
Honestly I fail to see why people have so much trouble adapting to OSX.

It's just changing a few things, the most trouble you'll have is adapting to shortcuts on familiar software such as Photoshop, because those can fuck you up.

Installing programs however, no biggie, drag and drop. When you open zip files by default they extract themselves into a folder. Mission Control is better than Task View on windows. Maximizing applications make them take all of the screen. Pressing Alt (or Option as they might call it) gives you access to more options. Many of the problems you might have are fixed by using the terminal and there's even a package manager there.

Really I can understand the frustration of someone switching from Windows directly to a distro like Arch, where he's completely unfamiliar without a desktop manager. But OSX ain't hard to learn.
>>
If you build your own PC with no mic and no webcam built in like laptops, and just use USB ones, and have 2 OSs, Windows 10 for gaming and Linux for everything else, can Microsoft still keylog and tap the webcam and audio and spy on your machine even if you're not booted in Windows 10 at the moment and only use it for gaming?

16-year-windows-admin-here-who-had-OSX-forced-on-him-after-career-change here, I had no problem adapting to it, but I understand why winfags do. It just feels.. Fischer Pricey.. It does not encourage deeper interaction if you get curious. Classic Shell and other UX tweaks are easy enough for a user with half a brain to find and install, but to do the same on OSX requires some heavier lifting (if it's even possible, I have never tried). Welcome to Apple's walled garden I guess.

The end result is winfags, who think they sysadmin nao because they changed how explorer looks, get in front of OSX, find they can't dick with it and proceed to bitch on /g/ about how shit it is. The nifty things like the dock and the drag and drop app installs get steamrolled by the complaints. This is of course amplified by the general background negativity around macfags and their shiny toys generally. It's part stubbornness and part ignorance. End of the day, all OS's are a punch in the dick one way or the other. You just need to find the one that punches softer than your dick is hard, and run with it.
