If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Was just given a Dell Inspiron N4110. sandy bridge i5, 6gb ram, needs a HDD.

Is it worth buying a cheap little SSD to stick in this thing? I already have a T420, not sure what I'd do with it, but having a backup couldn't hurt; alternatively I could sell it. Any idea what something like this is worth?

i have to admit this is a very nice way to carry my Thinkpad X230 which I would miss if I got a replacement 6 cell.

It lets you scroll pages by sliding your finger around the edge -- starting at the top or sides scrolls up and down and starting at the bottom scrolls left and right. As for the keyboard, I have no other choice but to buy a new one.

However, for the LCD panel, the area in contact with the spill has been "burnt", though the panel itself still works. I want to change it anyway, but I wonder if I can buy a panel from a x220 and enjoy a IPS screen instead.

Kinda worried about the only 8GB of RAM, but I guess with a SSD, running into /swap will not mean doing a 10 minutes break anymore?

>I'm looking for a thinkpad with a similar minimalist aesthetic to the t440s
how about the T450s? Or the T460s? Or if you want older and cheaper, the T430s? Or the T420s (or was that the series where the now s was the u?). Or any other semi-current thinkpad, since they all have absolutely the same astetics, besides the X1, which still looks similar enough, and the 15" ones, where they added a rtarded off-center keyboard.
>>
>>53624538
Wait, can't you just add RAM into it if you want to?
>>
>>53624604
Nope. Soldered, because >muh ultrabook
The T450s has 4GB soldered + one slot, which is kinda retarded on the one hand, but on the other hand, seems like a quite OK compromise. But other than that, the X1C really seems like some sweet machine, but I regurlarly fill up my RAM, when I work with large datasets [pretend-spoiler]in ipython and libreoffice[/pretend-spoiler]
>>
>>53624599
yeah the 450s and 460s look decent, is the 460s worth the extra cost?
also, how is the trackpad on these two, would I need to do any replacements?
>>
>>53624599
Having had a T410s, a T440s and now a T460s, the T440s was by far the worst experience. The touchpad was fucking ass, and the lack of separate trackpoint buttons was a dick move. Luckily they fixed this in the 460s. The 410 was a solid piece of machinery and still runs like a champ.

The 460s even has an easy-to-remove bottom cover which allows access to most components. The 440s required prying tools if i remember correctly, and had those nasty plastic clips that were sure to break should you try and open it.
>>
>>53624664
Oh and as mentioned, it has 4GB soldered on, and one slot. Got mine with a 4GB stick of DDR4 from the factory (+ the 4 soldered in), took that out and put in 16GB for a total of 20GB. The lack of an external removable battery is slightly disconcerting, though.

Any /tpg/ wisdom on the X1C, or is that too expensive for the poorfags amassed here?

Since the retard move to 16:9, a 14" screen is the absolute minimum (the move from my X61 or a X200 already was a huge downgrade), but a 14" laptop is way to big to carry around, so I have to get an ultrabook, and the X1 seems to be the chinkpad among ultrabooks.

So Panasonic is a fan of constant hardware revision and there are four different variants of the T8. The machine I picked up yesterday is a top-spec Mk.4, but the one I got today is a Mk.1.5 with a slightly slower C2D U9300.

They've also consolidated their driver downloads so that the 32-bit drivers come with 64-bit ones as well, but not all marks of machines have the same driver listing. Despite fully supporting Win7 x64, the Mk. 1.5 has no drivers for it despite the internal hardware being basically identical to the Mk.4. The solution of course is to simply install the Mk.4's Win7 driver package.

I almost want to hunt down a Let's Note top cover and Japanese keyboard for the full JDM tyte experience.

I guess they r e a l l y don't care about the general market
I can bet the majority of their sales come from contract purchases so they don't care too much about how many iterations of a model will exist in the end.
Keep in mind that they will also assemble custom models for large contract buyers. I'm unsure how those get labeled as models

What linux distros do you think would run well on a T420 with 4GB RAM and an i5 @ 2.50 Ghz ?

Just wondering if I should stick to lighter weight distros or if I'll be fine with some of the heavier/more fully featured DE's and whatnot

I really dislike scrolling with my trackpoint. Need advice. Are there any issues in buying something as old as a T60 other than the obvious? Should I be avoiding ATI graphics because of driver issues or anything like that which will come to bite me?
I'll be using GNU/Linux exclusively if that makes any difference.

Alternatively, are there any other laptops that maintained 4:3 for as long as the Thinkpads did?
>>
>>53638485
The T60 can only run 32bit things, but 32 bit GNU Linux is still available, though U'm not sure about browser support in the future. Also I don't think any other laptops did 4:3 as long as thinkpads did, they are a curmudgeon machine.
>>

The major weaknesses of the T60 are the 32-bit Yonah CPU, the 3GB RAM limit, and the shitty overheating wireless card. Even if you get the Merom refresh, you'll still be stuck with that 3GB limit because of the shitty chipset. ATI graphics are usable if you install a T500 fan, but if you're using Linux there isn't much reason to bother. Making the T601F solves all three problems without having to compromise on 4:3.

Can anyone redpill me on those for the broadwell generation in "ultrabooks" (=undervolted?)

How shitty is an i3, and how much power does an i7 waste?
How much of a

can I expect when I am coming from a C2D on either one of those?
How future proof are they? Especially considering pic related (though I think that are desktop chips) and this: http://www.economist.com/technology-quarterly/2016-03-12/after-moores-law

I mostly care about battery life, and speed-wise, my C2D isnt really feeling that slow, but I definitely want a machine that'll be good for at least 5 years.

Despite being a lowly i3 3120m, my sisters toshiba smokes my Q6600 and my Core 2 Duo laptop, while using the same 35w as my laptop, so even if you buy on the low end, the intel Ivy Bridge and newer are pretty fast, while using little power, and I see them being decent yars from now.

cost isn't a factor, is there any reason to go for an older T-series instead of a newer one?

(I'm mostly looking from T400 to T420, i don't want any of the clickpaddy chickletty nonsense.)

criteria is basically best performance, i can filter prices myself.
