At least with Microsoft they are quickly trying to converge everything to one OS and having it work fine. The problem with Apple is that they have no future strategy or products/redesigns that would ensure their survival as a luxury brand as far as I can tell other than the car and the watch, of the latter which is not popular and failing.
I'm already seeing investors of the stock on other websites question the price point and the margin on the profit hit Apple is taking to get the price to $399. There seems to be a contradiction here. Just because it's not some bloated specced gaming phablet doesn't mean it's not what people want. It's a phone- you don't need 6gigs of ram to call and text people, or to use messenger or surf the Internet. It's 400$, it has 4K and 240fps slow mo, it has Apple Pay, and it's the prettiest phone on the planet.

As nice as having a bigger screen is, id rather have an actual tablet for that purpose(which I do) Iuse my phone for calls, texting, checking email, checking my bank / bills. None of those things necessitate a large screen.
My upgrade from my 5c is coming up soon and I may just go for the SE instead of the 6. 6' 2" too, not a manlet. As long as the capacity is at least 16gb it's fine.
I think it's important to have separate devices for separate purposes. Mixing niches typically never goes nicely (see surface pro). A phablet is a novelty that looks retarded to use as a phone.

Now it's much more obvious on the bill and consumers are choosing different phones if they think they can't afford it, considering the US is the largest buyer of iphones this seems to be a strategy that makes more sense.
