Welcome to /flt/, we are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

CVE-2014-6271, aka Shellshock, allowed complete compromise of systems running GANOO BASH. After looking at the 20 year old, shit spaghetti code researchers discovered CVE-2014-6277, CVE-2014-6278, CVE-2014-7169, CVE-2014-7186, and CVE-2014-7187. More secure/faster/better alternatives include csh, tcsh, and pdksh.
CVE-2015-7547, a glibc getaddrinfo() vulnerability that allows anyone able to send UDP packets to your computer to compromise it, affects basically EVERY PIECE OF SOFTWARE that uses GANOO glibc. More secure/faster/smaller/better alternatives include musl and uClibc.

Well, it works on most terminals. Most people who fail to get picture preview working think it's the terminal, but actually, it's bit-depth related. When you use a terminal with 32bit+transparency enabled, w3m-img can't display it, but without, it works.

Example with urxvt:

urxvt -depth 24 -e bash -ic "ranger"
urxvt -depth 32 -e bash -ic "ranger"

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to Linux and immediately started using Kali Linux, I have pretty much learned most of the basic commands from school and some advanced commands from a few YouTube videos.

What would you recommend for a desktop?

>Ubuntu GNOME
>Kubuntu
>Debian Testing
>Debian Stable
>>
>>53612343
Neh, not really.

Windows malware to make damage to a linux host via wine has to be designed to do it.

I'm not saying it's impossible.
But the probability of it happening is low.

Consider linux desktop marketshare, then multiply it by the percentage of people who use wine on their desktops.
That's not a big number of people.
Definately not big enough to make the whole thing worth it.

Then again most wine users use wine for either
>commercial software not available on linux, ie adobe creative suite, microsoft office
>videogames
None of which come with malware.

If you want solid numbers - debian popularity contest.
In the section "by installed" - 109886 reported cases of package "xserver-xorg" being installed, which should be a fair estimate of how many desktop users are there among those who installed the popularity contest package
In the same section, package "wine" was installed only - 21150

You get rough estimate of 20%.

I guarantee that 99% of the issues you're having with Ubuntu are not with Ubuntu, rather with Unity, the default desktop environment.

I encourage you to take a look at the different flavors of Ubuntu and give them a spin. It's *the* distro for a newbie.

Mint is another popular option nowadays, it's an Ubuntu spinoff. It's been tagged as insecure because of a scandal that happened a month ago though

>So I wouldn't really gain anything by going Debian Testing instead of some flavor of Ubuntu?
Nope, not a single advantage. Maybe if you listen to archfags and their "muh bloat", but otherwise not really.

Main advantage of ubuntu are ppa's.

Main disadvantage of debian is the policy of non-free software. If you have hardware that requires binary blobs - it won't work.

>>
>>53612673

Kali is a custom-built distro that caters towards computer security professionals but it's mostly used by script kiddies that want to hack their neighbour's wifi.

It's not meant to cut your teeth on if you are trying to learn Linux. It's set up in a way that you are running everything as root by default, there is no user and then root, it's always root because most of the programs and pentesting tools require root access from my brief experience with Kali.

tl;dr get a basic distro like Linux Mint if you want to learn the basics of Linux as in how to perform basic functions in a Linux environment.

Learning Linux via Kali is like learning how to operate a firearm with a rocket propelled grenade launcher.

It all depends on your taste. Take a look at screenshots or videos and decide for yourself. The only difference is the desktop environment, the underlying OS is the same. Or even better, boot them up in a virtual machine and take them for a spin to see which you feel more comfortable with.

Kali is a distro meant to be run from a fucking usb stick/live cd

Because many penetration testing methods/tools have unnecessarily elaborate methods of upgrading their components and databases kali was build not to be updated/upgraded with built in commands but rather installed fresh with a newer image every now and then.

It's a single-purpose disposable distro.
