yeah, and most people use programs that expose more functionality than those programs. IDEs like IntelliJ, Eclipse, etc... expose functionality that none of these editors even claims to do. Even simple editors like Sublime Text offer linting and autocomplete and whatnot that vim and emacs tend not to have. And the plugins that enable some of that functionality *do* add to the computational/resource footprint of these programs.
I know that some people still use this software (i use vim), but you people are being stupid on purpose if you're trying to ignore that most developers only use vim/emacs incidentally (to say nothing of most users, who have long since moved on from those editors to WYSIWYG editors like Word and Pages (which offer lots of features and functionality that, while I don't need/would never use, nevertheless are complex and empirically resource-intensive).

What used to be 2gb many years ago 8 gb is the stanrdard right now.
And what used to be 4gb and usually geeks had it is the 16 gb .. actually slowly people starting to get 32 gb for their home computers... but they're a small minority.
Firefox in casual browsing with settings to write everything on ram and nothing on hard disk go to 1 - 1.5 gb stable ram usage...

Visual Studio doesn't lag at all on a modern system (like mine). It takes a while to startup the first time after boot, then it's blazing fast. Why would anybody even still use vim? It's faster and a hell lot more convenient to code your shit on Windows, using a proper UI, then just compile it with gcc if you really must.

But I don't want to whitewash it either, because I didn't test the plugin support and because the auto updater apparently doesn't work on my linux machine.
