Can somebody explain what exactly is so bad about Ubuntu? Serious question, I never bothered looking into it before, but now that I installed it in a VM I am actually extremely impressed

Why's it considered a botnet?

This is the same guy that refuses to use a browser.

Instead he has a script that emails him websites from an anonymized computer, which he then reads in an editor as plaintext

Right, so is it only about the Dash-online-search, or is there more spying going on?

Pretty much yeah. The non-free issues with ubuntu are:
Amazon searching via dash - enabled by default
Tools to install proprietary blobs and non-free software are used for convenience (nvidia/amd propietary driver installers, flash installer, nonfree codecs)
>>
the problem with ubuntu is that some people doesn't like it and they get extremely butthurt when other people disregard their opinions.

It's a bit more nuanced than that

https://stallman.org/stallman-computing.html

>I generally do not connect to web sites from my own machine, aside from a few sites I have some special relationship with. I usually fetch web pages from other sites by sending mail to a program (see git://git.gnu.org/womb/hacks.git) that fetches them, much like wget, and then mails them back to me. Then I look at them using a web browser, unless it is easy to see the text in the HTML page directly. I usually try lynx first, then a graphical browser if the page needs it (using konqueror, which won't fetch from other sites in such a situation).

I occasionally also browse unrelated sites using IceCat via Tor. Except for rare cases, I do not identify myself to them. I think that is enough to prevent my browsing from being connected with me.

Honestly at this point even though gentoo is a meme it's easily the best distro you could use

What's bad about Ubuntu is that it's easy to use, has one of the largest selection of software, and just works out of the box.

It's a distro made for ease of use and functionality. Arch fags can't handle that

Default is unity
Unity has lens
There is a history of noobs not being able to disable it
There is more history if it fucking your system if you disable it
lens uploads similar data to windows 10
more importantly, making a menu system that has these kind of dependencies makes me rage
Most of this is fixed, but you need to know to look for it and click that magic button that turns it off

#2
Installing something outside of apt-get is a fucking cluster. Easy to do and then your package system is borked. Yes, if RTM you will be fine

#3
Some ties in the system are getting suspect. Their recent deal with M$, corresponds with M$ move to MSSQL to linux. M$ is trying to take on oracle and canonical has a rich history of fucking with any other database that isn't MySQL.

>Installing something outside of apt-get is a fucking cluster. Easy to do and then your package system is borked. Yes, if RTM you will be fine
Not really
Using the GUI to install a .deb file is quite normal

If you want to use dpkg, you just need to fix the dependencies with apt-get install -f
>>
>>53605552
didn't mention the GUI

install from source an intermediate package and tell me how your apt-get install -f works after anything in the chain gets updated

when installing from source i just put everything somewhere in /home/user/bin, compile and run from there, theres no need to put it in database to fuck it up even more than it is, optionally i move binaries to /opt by hand if it requires to be system available for some reason
>>
>>53605933
I do the same thing (now), my comment was that your package manager shouldn't refuse to run if you do otherwise.
>>
>>53605933
you are doing it wrong anon, that's a folder used by automated scripts, if you compile and copy the binaries yourself you should be using

Not in 16.04. Also, there's literally a button to turn it off. If you're that paranoid, there's FixUbuntu.

That can be done on any Linux distro. Nice try.

You're thinking Mint, kiddo. You have to install the non-free stuff if you want it in Ubuntu. Good try though kid, I'm impressed.

Retard, the non-free package in ubuntu is just for flash/java/other plugins. It comes with plenty of non-free drivers by default for convenience. Do some research before calling others kid, kid.

You have to opt in to the proprietary extras, it isn't Mint.

Windows is used mostly by computer illiterate retards and /v/ spillage. Extracting windows from the spyware has become impossible. /g/'s pathetic windows user base first tried to deny the existence of all the spywares. When they are presented with valid proofs they resort to "nothing to hide" jokes. I wonder why they want their phone, PC locked. I wonder how many of them have their facebook/g+/twitter wall/profile public.

Currently windows is the most exploit ridden security nightmare even though the source is closed. Windows is the most inefficient, crash prone and exploit vulnerable consumer-grade OS in the history.

>>53604601
Ubuntu has an amazon bot but it could be removed. Furthermore the next release is not going to have this spyware any more. Currently it effects the vanilla unity desktop.
>>
>>53606057
Because it's a beta? They're worrying about adding code to meet a deadline not remove code which takes 1/3 the time.
