In Windows, yes it probably will just fuck up and die. In Linux you disable one of the cards in kernel parameters, and then pass the bus to a virtual machine. Then you can run Windows with a dedicated gpu (games, rendering, etc.) with minimal overhead.

I used to run two 6870 and a dedicated 9800gt physx. There used to be some 'hack' that you ran then it would work. I only ever tested it Though because there's no purpose to a dedicated physx card.
