The problem with the advanced tech meme is that it literally caused Japanese people to become slaves to a few narrow business conglomerations, and that when those businesses bottom out because they have to absorb the loans that the banks are giving people to make do with their shitty salaries that people can't possibly pay back in their lifetimes.
Work for the conglomeration or starve. There is no leaving the company. There are no pensions. You will work until you die.

They would be fine if productivity wasn't so low. They mostly associate time spent at work as how good of an employee you are. Doesn't matter if you are slow, just spend more time at work. Then you have management that refuse to adopt new things, so you have companies still using faxes and sending written letters all over the place. Combine all that with japanese being nihilistic, they will see a problem, shug and just say it can't be helped.
Although quality remains high in japanese products, they're just so slow and expensive they struggle to compete.
