I recently faced an issue with my computer freezing. I played battlefield 3 with the cpu and gpu graph open and I found out that I'm getting these massive spikes that result in ~5sec screen freezing. This happens like every 30secs and makes gaming unplayable.
This also happens when I'm just browsing the internet so I doubt that it's a cpu heat issue.
Any ideas on what's causing this or how to fix it?

What have you tried to do to fix it?

ran a virus scan, downloaded new grapics card drivers, tried shutting down several processes without result

I replaced my heatsink's thermal paste with mayonnaise, as apparently it works really well. I thought it was a joke at first, but there are all sorts of videos and articles on it.

2 recommendations
1 - remove graphics card and see how it goes
2 - Live USB with your preferred distro and test
In both occasions, use your brain and take your own conclusions.

Upgrade to a Mac.

Disable hyperthreading and add some voltage to your GPU.
to add: There is always a windows notification sound effect when the freeze happens.
Pull ram out and try one stick at a time. Also check pagefile.
Check how hot your peripherals are actually getting anon.
It's probably getting extremely hot and the PC is unable to perform.
