what's the highest quality desktop speakers (for listening to music) I can buy for ~$400?
At that price you can have an O2+ODAC and a really good pair of headphones.

but I need desktop speakers, I already have headphones

some 80s bookshelf speakers and a yamaha reciver off craigslist will always do the trick.

>craigslist
I'm not in the US

Get a pair of Elac speakers ($500), some yoga foam bricks ($5) to place the tweeters at ear level with the speakers leaning inward as to form an imaginary equilateral triangle that points towards your head, and a decent amp ($75).

I have a scarlett 2i2 audio interface and m-audio bx6 carbons, cost me roughly 400 euros.
Great quality, no issues, I highly recommend them.
From my own experience I can say that the KRK RP5 Rokits are a decent pair of monitors as well, they are about the same price as the bx6's
I'm guessing you won't need the combo inputs so you can get a bit cheaper interface like the m-audio m-track hub
Also spending a bit of money, $40 or so, for acoustic treatment is a great addition
Does anyone here use floor stereo speakers as their primary battlestation speakers? Is that a good idea?
>>53591806
1. Speakers: Music Hall - Marimba: $210 to $250 new.
2. Any standard used receiver on craigslist for under $80. -- Or -- Cambridge Audio 540R, in good condition, at $150.

Tell me what country you live in and I can find you something on your local ebay.

the woofer surrounds are likely decomposing

Hungary
I was thinking about getting an Audioengine A5+

It's true

You mean something like these?
I've seen people use them as their battlestation speaker but honestly I don't think it's a good idea
Most of the speaker elements would be under your desk and not at your ear level.
Also they are not designed to be that close to you in the first place.
Getting active studio monitors or bookshelf speakers and putting them on monitor stands either on your desk, or behind your desk would be the best option.
That way the speaker placement is optimal, meaning that the angle between your ear and the speaker cones is 60 degrees and the speakers would also be at the right height, with the tweeter being at ear level.

Okay, let me look around on the Hungary sites.
The ELAC recommendation is a good one -- there are less expensive ELACs also. Audioengine is a good brand as well.
>>53595829
No. Noise floor is high. Poor shielding, thus hum. Also, shitty sound for listening to music. Many better values.

Found an amplifier/receiver:

I can't read the Hungarian but the price is about $50 US?
It doesn't look like Hungary has an ebay. Can you get items from German ebay without import fees or ridiculous shipping charges?

Quite a good mid-range amplifier on vatera:

A solid mid-quality (audiophile) speaker on jofogas:

But this might be what you're looking for:

If you only want an active monitor, the Audioengines are well-reviewed.

probably not

thanks a lot, but I think I'll go with the Audioengine A5+ active instead for $400

Cerwin Vega XD5, €354 on amazon.de. These are active studio monitors.
Are extremely accurate with great detailed sound. Have as much bass on their own as other speakers that are accompanied by subwoofers.
...but you can also plug a subwoofer into them: the Cerwin Vega XD8S, €194 on amazon.de.
Total: €548, or $617.
If the total setup costs too much for you, then replace the XD5 with the XD4. That'll shave off €100 right there while still keeping you heaps above what anyone else can offer. Or you can even get the XD3.
Highly, highly recommend. Have the XD4 on my PC and the XD3 on my tv, myself.

is this it?

€354? because here it says "delivered in pairs" and costs only €161, so what the fuck is going on?
