Is that WINE? How well does it run?
>>
>>53588576
>>53588549
how do you guys have so few packages? before i get a fully functional system i need like 2000 packages
>>
>>53588577
Runs well with wine and mods. Most dx9 stuff works pretty well (skyrim, blizzard games, league of legends, etc). It is true not everything works but I already have more titles than I'll ever play.
>>
>>53588549
What's your evioriment bro?
>>
>>53588577
not the guy you're replying to, but on my machine gta iv runs much worse on wine than it does on windows
>>
>>53588663
kek, stop instaling DE
>>
>>53588709
actually now i might be interested in switching to a WM
how many dependencies does i3 or awesome have?
>>
>>53588751
i3 and awesome are tilling managers, first i recomending you to use openbox
>>
>>53588663
I really just use openbox and i3 so it cuts on random bloat a lot. I add thunar, mousepad, and xfce terminal from my experience with that de. Install a few extra apps like steam, Spotify, playonlinux to manage wine versions, dropbox, media player like vlc.

My GTA screen shot really is on a damn fresh install so that helps keep packages low.

genkernel sucks, one time i used genkernel, and all my network drivers has been fucked up
> manual kernel compile ftw
>>
>>53588785
This is the only guide you should use
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64
>>
>>53588693
Oh yeah. Most wine stuff will run better with Windows no doubt. I can still get 60 fps in Linux tho so I'd rather play on that system even if it is less optimal. It's not like settings have to be turned to shit or anything.
>>
>>53588771
i think the tiling wms look really cool and thats why im interested in them. are they that much worse to configure and use ?
>>
>>53588843
most time yes, for example to configure dwm (screenshot >>53588576) you have to know programming in C, xmonad you need haskell you and for lot of things you have to know bash scripting
>>
>>53588864
oh shit
guess i will try openbox for now
>>
>>53588843
i3 is pretty easy to get into. Setup is automatic and it asks you a few questions. You can view a small chart of important hotkeys on the website.

I'm assuming you have a display manager. You can simply install the i3 package and select it at your login screen to try.

How hard is it to set up gentoo?
>>

depens on your hardware and skills

How hard will it be with a virtual box vm with 4 years experience with various distros?

i3 comes with relatively sane configuration out of the box and an excellent guide on the website. Install it, read in the documentation how to start firefox with dmenu so you can open up the guide in the new environment, and log into it from your DM screen. Then try stuff out using a bunch of terminal windows.
>>
>>53588916
>>53589024
okay you two convinced me
gonna try i3 tomorrow and see how it goes. if i like it and it isnt too much of a hassle im probably gonna leave gnome behind.
>>
Good luck OP; we are all counting on you.
>>
>>53588925
Can you handle it like xfce4? Because i'm curious, it looks really nice.

enjoy your wasted spring break

Looks such cool
>>
>>53588663
Mostly because many of Those packages are additional features to other packages. Gentoo uses USE flags instead of those, that's why it has such a low package count.
>>
>>53589151
That’s cool! I’d love to get i3 riced like that but I have no idea what the cleanest way to install i3gaps on Gentoo is.
>>
>>53591278
The website has make instructions. May need to install some dependencies but the error message would just tell you the files.
>>
>>53591529
So the only way to get it is to install i3 (to get all the dependencies) and then i3gaps through git?
>>
>>53588709
I have xfce installed and less than 700 packages soo.
>>
>>53588508
Have fun with Adobe CC , MS Office and DX 12.
>>
>>53591766
>Adobe CC
WINE exists.

>MS Office
Both LibreOffice and LaTeX exist.

>DX 12
Vulkan exists.

Anything else?
