Why doesn't the fbi just literally crack open the phone and copy the physical state of the switches inside the device onto other iPhones and just try to get into 100 different iPhones that should all have the same lock combo? It is not about being able to crack the current phones.
They see that it takes more and more effort to crack these things.
And at some point, it will take them more time to crack something than it would for someone to secure the system.
So what they want is to prevent companies to provide security.
It is a weird ass logic, and it will never work, americans can still make applications, they can ship the source to another country and compile it there if they need to.
They can move to a civilized country if it becomes worse.
As I see it, the current system is fine.
Getting access from the phone is hard, dismantling the phone to get access is harder but the way to do it.
The government should be able to get access to phones if they have a warrant.
They should be able to take the phone apart, clone the drive, run a brute force attack and get access to the data if they have a warrant.
But forcing the company who made the phone to work for the ones who want to break into it is madness.
They are free to hire them to do it, but forcing someone to work for you, for free, is slavery.
It is not apple who is breaking the law.
FBI made a mistake and destroyed evidence.

But it is not on apple to invent a fix for the mistakes of FBI.

Why doesn't the FBI physically give the phone to Apple? Apple could crack the password behind closed doors, determine if the data is worth anything, and if it contains terrorism information, hand that information over to the FBI.
