A few years back I bought a Thinkpad which had a Windows 7 Professional license sticker on the bottom. I never used Windows on that laptop so I used the license number for my gaming desktop. Now I have upgraded it to Windows 10 Professional and I still haven't actually bought Windows at any point.
Too bad they stopped doing the sticker model, now it would be harder to put the license to another computer. I'm still trying to not buy Windows seperately, I'm hoping to use Steam OS on my next gaming desktop.
I bought an oem of Windows 7 a few years ago. I didn't have a DVD writer and my old PC had issues with booting from USB devices, so I was only left with buying Windows 7.
Here's an interesting thing to note. I've been told that you can only install an oem of Windows 7 on a single machine, that you can't authenticate it on new hardware, however I bought a new computer a few months ago and it authenticated just fine.
I really have to wonder how many times I could get away with this.
