I'm using OSMC (kodi) on my Raspberry Pi connected to my TV, with a cheap custom remote connected on the gpio ports.
It connects to Emby, my media server on my shitty PC that uses my NAS filled with 14tb movies/tv shows. The media server contains metadata, watched status, user accounts, a web interface, etc. I can also use my mobile phone as a remote too.
