Is this bullshit as overhyped (exactly like 3d printing) as I think it is?

how is 3d overhyped? designer here who uses 3d printing everyday, it's really a great way to present progress to boss etc.

it's a waste of money. almost all these VR techs will fail.
>>
>"I am not interested in [device] even though other people are"
>"it must be overhyped"
fucking idiot
>>
>>53576187
I am interested in both 3d printing and vr but when I think of them I see no interest from the average person.

>>53576110
>how is 3d overhyped?
The whole "3d printers will be as common as computers" thing
>>
>>53576316
Also you can only print shitty plastic pieces of shit when everyone thought they were going to print themselves a car or a girlfriend.
>>
>>53576008
yes
>>
>>53576396
>when everyone thought they were going to print themselves a car or a girlfriend
Bullshit! Only delusional fags like you thought like that. Real people who do work knew what 3d printing was going to be like and are gladly using it like it should be used.
>>
>>53576316

You can do metal with laser or electron beam printers

They're starting to hit shops for demos, at least a couple if you're located in the UK.

I think if you try one (specifically the vive, IMO oculus has poisoned the well) you might change your mind, but in general the first wave of VR isn't really that great for consumers, I would personally wait until the 2nd or 3rd generation unless you need it as a dev or something. But then again, if VR really wants to succeed it needs adopters.
>>
>>53576442
CNC. Enough said. Not printing.
>>
>>53576440
Sure, but it was incredibly overhyped by normies for a while. Not sure what the event was that got everyone talking.
>>
>>53576110
I never tried one, it is really that good? Can you print figures or things with the same level of detail?
>>
>>53576008
Well, I'm only gonna buy a ps4 to use vr. I bought the Google cardboard (nice one from aliexpress). Will buy samsung vr when I upgrad e my phone. Still running galaxy s5. Also gonna get a rift when it comes out.

Vr porn sites are a thing '- check

3d printers are useful, just bit pricey. VR is a stillbirth because the technology is not good enough. Nobody wants to strap half a kilogram on their fucking head.

>>53576187
Given the amount of news and articles about VR vs their use and the size of the userbase, it's clearly that the shit is overhyped.
>>
>>53576499

PSVR will be crap unless they make some serious progress in the next 5 months or so.

Watching movies in VR is a serious resolution downgrade, gear vr right now at 1400 resolution is like 360x400: https://imgur.com/a/lerfd

Not to mention Gear VR causes nausea without positional tracking, oculus and PSVR tracking limits are basically standing or sitting while facing forward.

>>
>>53576560
Boo hoo... it's time for the tech. It will improve. I love your petty complaints.
>>
>>53576580

Well yeah, I'm just saying that consumers might now realize what they're buying may not be what they expect it to be.
>>
>>53576667

With VR you can't just quote resolutions, you have to do pixels per degree. 1600p at 360 degrees is going to look very different from 1600p at 50-60 degrees that you would normally have on a monitor. However, if you've already tried VR you probably know that.

>>53576667
>that thigh scar

sauce?
>>
>>53576316
People will always meme, it doesn't take away from how astounding the technology is.
>>
>>53576008
i wanted to believe, but those reviews of launch software from valve, oculus and sony were frankly disheartening.

only saving grace of the entire vr multiplatform was google's Tilt Brush, but not like the future of photoshop or anything, but just a gimmicky shit i'd use once a year or something,
>>
>>53576704
I can't speak for every other VR experience, but most of the videos are in a format similar to QuicktimeVR so you most definitely can quote a resolution.
>>
>>53576316
they kind of are though... at least the early computers... my library has 3d printers you can use lol
>>
Can't say I have given a damn about VR so far, but today I tried the Samsung VR thing and gotta say it was better than I expected.
It responded very well to movement and they have really nailed the field of vision.
By instinct I wanted to instantly start walking in the VR world, so if you're getting one of these VR goggles, then get the model that tracks all kinds of movement.

Only problem with it was that the image was flickering a bit, so you do need a pretty beefy machine to run it, or you're in for a shit experience.
Also you can pretty clearly see the pixels in this phone variant.
Probably the only use you'll ever have for a 4k phone.

Does this have a future?
Very hard to say, after all there are so many different things you can do with these.
I do think that we're in for an era of gimmicky first person movies or first person movie moments that are clearly meant for VR and it's going to piss everyone who's not into this off.
Also I'm 100% certain that it has a future in porn and that's not exactly a small industry, so VR is most likely going to be around for a while.
Honestly I can say I'd buy these for porn.
>>
>>53576480
i recall some people connecting it with the star wars food printer
>>
It might catch on. Who knows.

3d printed petered off because the media was hyping it as if they're as cheap or easy as paper printers. Well they're not, and some people can barely use paper printers.

>>53576110
>designer here
See you're a designer, you have a use for it. I'm a hobbyist and I like building things so a printer is useful for me as well. But 99% of people aren't either of these and have little to no use for a printer.

VR is still not ready yet. There's still no key app that people need, along with other things like
>expensive
>cool but not really useful
>not a simple extension of current tech
>represents a radical change from regular screens/phones

I have a feeling that this'll catch on in a few years or so, but not now. This is like the windows xp tablet microsoft introduced over a decade ago. When someone finally makes an accessible VR device, maybe then it'll become normalized. Reminds me of how the iPhone started the smartphone trend.
VR is great because it IS different from other things, but that's one of its weaknesses as well. Once it does catch on, it'll be a whole new shift in thr world. I'm gonna like this.

If VR ends up adopted in the business space it'll make its way to consumer space.

My VR set is going to be like an extra set of tits. Even if detractors think its useless, im still going to have fun playing with it.
>>
>>53586323
so in other words, a gimmick
>>
>>53585695
this
VR remains behind closed doors, while AR will penetrate the daily marketplace due to it's potential for things like shopping (not to mention advertising potential). Also "everybody is naked" will be such a great app.
>>
>>53584043
How easy would this be to set up in general? Holy shit I want 20 virtual screens
>>
>>53586336
Its too big to be a gimmick now. There is too much you can do and its only going to get better once GPU power catches up.

On the gaming side, just knowing ill be able to play swordsman with controls and viewpoint that is impossible to match with any other input has me sold.

Forget Mountain Blade and the other clones, people will be swinging and moving their bodies naturally instead of stumbling around on kb/mouse.
>>
>>53586438
>Its too big to be a gimmick
lol

>ill be able to play swordsman
>hit enemy with virtual sword
>sword goes through enemy
so natural
>>
>>53586457
Its simple to train the brain the limits. Haptic feedback will tell you when the sword makes impact, visual feedback will tell you that its no longer passing through despite your actions.
>>
>>53576008
It will literally be on every phone.
