Welcome to /flt/, we are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Depends on how it's distributed, which isn't necessarily limited to one way! Maybe there's a repository available that carries the package. Perhaps there's a binary (like .deb or .rpm or what-have-you) available for download on the developers' site. Mayhap I will install it from source!

There is likely more specific information available at wherever you downloaded whatever from, or otherwise included in the archive as another Anon suggests.

So I've been running various Linux distros on my laptop for a while now and have been using Manjaro for a few months. I liked it so much, that I decided to get it on my main desktop. There is one problem however: the games that I run on Windows -- even the ones that can run natively on Linux -- are hideously laggy with huge consistent lag spikes every few seconds. According to MHWD, I have the latest non-free driver for my Nvidia GTX 750 ti. Is there a way to solve this on Manjaro; will changing to a different distro centred around games that supports a wide-range of GPUs, like Play-Linux (or others you can suggest) solve this; or will I have to boot Windows every time I want to play games?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'd like to install Arch on my desktop alongside Windows 7, but I'm simply too stupid and I can't comprehend how to adapt the partitioning/mounting part of the install process for a system that has several windows partitions.

I want to take the 100GB of unallocated space I have, turn it into a logical ext4 partition, put all of Arch on that single one, and then install grub and have it recognize windows as well.
Hopefully without fucking up my partition table

Hi /flt/, I'm a (former) arch user looking to switch to a different distro for my VM. I intend to use my VM to do simple things mostly involving the command line, such as small-scale programming, that is generally over-complicated to do in a windows environment.

What I like about arch is that it doesn't come bundled with a dozen games and office suites and music playing software. As I'm not using Linux as a primary OS, but rather for its terminal, package manager, and browser, I do not need those things. I'd like to only install what I need beyond the desktop environment and other absolute basics.

However, I find that arch is a bit too power-user centric for my needs. A nice robust Linux distro for normies is likely to work better for me.

Is my best bet to get Ubuntu/Mint/other debian-based distro and remove all the stuff I have no need for, or is there a distro out there that seems to fit my use case?
>>
>>53579870
You can do a minimal install of most distros, including Ubuntu and Debian. No need to remove stuff.

I'd like to injerject for a moment here.
What you are refering to as GNU, is in fact linux-libre/GNU, as the GNU 'OS' itself does not work without a working kernel, whereas Linux does work fine without GNU. The GNU project even had to fork the famous Linux kernel to make the claim the 'GNU OS' is complete, where their very own effort called HURD still does NOT work after 20 years in developement.

Don't be the one, don't be a GNUfag.

well I canceled the update, updated my mirror list but ran into a key error when I tried to -Syu. Had to do the following as root to reset my keyring

# rm -R /etc/pacman.d/gnupg/
# rm -R /root/.gnupg/ # only if the directory exists
# gpg --refresh-keys
# pacman-key --init && pacman-key --populate
# pacman-key --refresh-keys

but it's working now. Thanks everyone

Why wouldn't you just update the keyring specifically first, fixes the issue: pacman -S archlinux-keyring

Considering picking up an old PowerPC iBook or Powerbook (G4)

What's a good distro?
(not really GNU/Linux so much as hardware, but humor me.) Will it still choke to death on the modern web? (better or worse than an Atom netbook?)

Mostly looking into it for fun/novelty of a PPC machine, but curious nonetheless as to how far I can push it in THE CURRENT YEAR

I'm following these threads since a while, so here a tl;dr

Some YouTube normie killed it. Normie tried to install Arch via Architect, but it didn't work. He reported the bug and the Architect developer banned him. Normie made another video about it, dev got mad and deleted all ressources.

I'd say: Ragequit.

Horrible, they have so many patches they need to fix. Don't use Ubuntu, use Mint or Gentoo or Arch

Bout 10 years ago people started to find out that if you want to totally lie about something or pretend to sound smart or interesting, all you have to do is pick something that nobody knows about. They have no idea what it is, so they tend to at least kind of believe you when you say it's so good, implication being again that you are smart or have taste or did work to find some hidden gem. This is what's called a hipster. Now let's try this for computer

>Walk in room
>See everyone using windows
>Hmmm.... better switch to mac!
>next room
>has the collection of mac users
>Hmmm... Better try linux.
>Go on the internet
>find masses of people using ubuntu, fedora, debian
>hmmm.... better go for arch.
Process repeats itself after this too, head on over to our current desktop thread to see the initial arch ricers calm and satisfied that they think they are snowflakes and when other arch users show up, it's
>not using some obscure dead tiling wm

For comparison:
Words said for music hipster type
>Yeah it's a different kind of music not from around here...

Words said for computer hipster type
>It's a "do it yourself" distro...

What is after both of these "..." ? Well, they both secretly end in "...I think I'm fucking better than you."
>>
>>53578332
just do
make
sudo make install

goodluck with dependencies but if you're in arch most of the packages are in the Arch User Repository while in debian based ditros they use PPAs

I tried and failed some research into compiling linux for my specific build and now I need help because I couldn't find anything for compiling to my build and the reasons are 1: all the popular distros either break [lost control over sleep timer, dm breaks after wakeup from sleepmode, power manager doesn't respond] or 2 have small nuances that irk me [scroll bar extreme side on some windows doesn't count as part of the scroll bar when window is maximized]. So, if I were going to compile some linux and tailor it to my hardware, what pieces should I pick?
