What sort of internet connection do you have and what do you do with it?

Currently not much, had it installed a couple weeks ago. I initially thought I'd use my Mikrotik router although it's not geared for PPPoE + NAT at speeds higher than ±80Mbps.
>>
>>53569463
I would like to put up a Linux server when I get around to buying the hardware.
What would you do with this sort of connection in your home?

Doesn't it seem to you like the US is falling behind with internet infrastructure in the recent years?

Are you happy with the service you have been receiving?
They are a little more expensive but I have zero complaints.

Do you use your connection for anything else such as server hosting etc?

Is that a Ubiquity router I see in the rack?
Also do you have experience with Mikrotik routers and could suggest a device capable of handling throughput in this range?
>>
>>53569763
its a ubiquiti edgerouter pro.

And as far as mikrotik goes, the CCR range will offer enough bandwith but then your already in the same pricerange as the ubiquiti.
a RB1100AHx2 would also do.

Then you're already sitting in the €300 price range, not something I am currently prepared to spend without having a good use case, such as what you have with your server rack.

Luckily I held off buying the RB750Gr2 and tested first with a rbmap2n
>>
>>53569914
go for a edgrouter lite, that should handle the connection just fine, friend of mine runs it on his 500/500 without any problems.
I just like the pro as I can hook it up directly to my fiber switch and I get about 600 NTP requests per second which the lite can handle that well.
>>
>>53569717
Is xs4all concerned much with data usage on these connections, I know they allow hosting, however what is their policy when dealing with multiple TB transfer from a single user?

I personally don't see myself using more than 500 GB under normal circumstances, not without servers.

Thanks I will check out that router, I'm quite fond of their wireless range but have never dabbled with their Router OS

Seriously, what are the countries with the best internet to the general public?

Lived on Brazil and the best I could hope to attain was 20Mb/s with some outrageous 150ms ping on any online game. And I've always heard that Japan was supposed to be heaven compared to this.
Moved to Japan, it's the same fucking bullshit, except the internet is more monitored, on Brazil at least I could torrent without a VPN with no worries. Currently on Japan 30Mb/s ~80ms. The good connections are not attainable by the general public, that usually shares the connection between an entire building or only uses 4G.

I envy every printscreen where it shows sub 10ms pings.

>MURICA
No, thanks, I don't want to deal with more bullshitting ISPs (Comcast, etc), had enough problems with them already. I just want some honest ISP to honor the promised speeds/latencies.
>>
>>53570000
That's absolutely insane :O
Well at least you're making good use of your setup, and I will no longer worry about my data usage.
>>
>>53570055
It seems that the ISPs in Europe are a little better than what you have used, although not all countries have the infrastructure in place for high speed residential.

I feel your pain though, I had lived in countries where I could also only obtain a couple of Mbps with unstable connections.

Yes, kilobytes.

>what you use it for
Gaymes and downloading gaymes

Took me 24 hours to download GTA V

Can't get anything better because no one on my road probably even knows what internet does and so they probably aren't going to put the money into having a new cable brought down our road.
>>

I hope so, planning to move there during my masters degree.

On Brazil I worked on a CompSci department and we supposedly had the best internet on the country; it's just a optical fiber connection between the biggest universities there. While I could download any linux distro at 1Gb/s the connection was handled by a bunch of government amteurs. So every other week we would have a day without internet or super slow speeds.

While on Japan discussing with my Network Engineering, about the conception that people on Brazil have about Japan's internet connections and the speeds I've had on the CompSci department, he seemed dumbfounded. He could not comprehend that great speed/latency should be residentialy avaiable, and I can't understand why the fuck not.

6km, a few months ago i had 1mb/s...

covage is installing the fiber in my area, maybe it's connected, I'll leave free in a few months when the fiber is fully deployed.
>>
>>53570860
Well.... when you do a speed test and use bytes of course it's going to look 8 times slower than normal. bits/s is the standard metric for connection speed, lad.

Yep, with 6km it'll be hard to do better unfortunately.

Maybe Covage is bringing fiber to install new "MeD" nra with Orange and / or Free. I hope it for you.

What the fuck man, I live in bumfuck nowhere midwest USA and I pay half of that for 3x as much speed. And I thought I was overpaying. I don't have a cap either, since Comcast in my area doesn't do it and probably just doesn't give a shit like they do in cities.

Also out of curiosity I looked up stuff about Comcast in my small-ass town and apparently we are one of the few places with Gigabit Internet. Tons of towns in Indiana actually. But it's $300 so fuck that. If it were $100 I would pay that to stream 4K videos on YouTube just because I can.
