What I've observed at my company (~35,000 employees) is that software engineers use Linux PCs at their desk, but they always pick the Macbook option for their laptop. On my team of ~20 I might be the only one with a Thinkpad. I just find Macs annoying to use, but everyone prefers the fashion statement I guess.

Nah, they prefer the superior hardware + the superior OS.
There's not much point of using linux on windows laptops as hardware support is poor I suppose.
With a mac laptop you know it will reliably work with OSX and you can dual boot linux.
On a windows laptop if you have any hardware issues dual booting linux you have to then use windows which is terrible.
OSX is getting pretty terrible as well, poor opengl,cuda and opencl support, no vulkan and a terrible filesystem.
