I would probably buy Windows if there was a modern "XP" with no spyware and unnecessary telemetry and even the necessary telemetry were opt-in. The basic requirement is that I use the operating system instead of the operating system using me.
Once I buy a new desktop within a couple of months, I won't be using Windows on it because I'm not going to buy a licence for a deprecated OS (or pirate the licence) nor am I going to use Windows 10 OEM. So that will be the end.
