SQL is not easy if you've written more than a select * from table where id=1 query in your life. Multiple joins, subselects, inline views, aggregations complicate things and let's not talk about analytical functions and for example model clause.
Of course, if you're not some BI analytics guy or work with databases extensively, you don't need much more than the above mentioned statement plus group by and order by.

Because knowing how to use query languages, especially in the case of SQL, helps in understanding more behind the database schema design. If the class has anything theoretical like the algorithms the database uses, then that too.
