The alternative is to not use email at all to communicate sensitive information.
I run my own email server and use PGP but I fully acknowledge I am literally wasting time and money since every fucking one I write to use either gmail or microsoft account.
The only reason I still use my own email server is because it will probably makes it harder for google/microsoft/etc to make profit with my fucking data but from a security and privacy perspective it is fucking pointless.

well I didn't get the idea from /g/. I was just looking to create a mail address without resorting to outlook/g-mail/yahoo and protonmail seemed like a good enough bet.
