What does /g/ have in his phone?

Not a gaymer and I already installed modded Spotify for free premium shit, so music it's not a choice.

Just bought a lg g4 on the cheap, how did i do? Upgrading from first gen moto g, battery life on my moto g is crazy, can do some light usage and only charge once a week. Watching some videos on 4G during commutes etc.

I heard the stock camera app is the best, is it worth installing a custom rom for battery life when the camera gets worse?
>>
>>53546874
Music takes up over 25GB on my device, I also use it as a USB storage device that I can't lose easily. Handy to keep some usefull software like installers for winrar, video players etc to install on computers. I also put some tv shows/movies on it for watching on long commutes.

My LG G4 has now gone off for it's third repair (1 by carrier, 1 by LG which was unsuccessful) for the bootlooping issue by LG, this time by a "head engineer".

So I'm typing this on my friends 6p and it's actually really nice. I'm thinking of upgrading from my HTC m8 but was worried if my manlet hands could cope with this phone. Had the Moto X Play, great phone for the price, almost stock android and godlike battery, MM improves the poor optimization that Lollipop had.

A5, G3, Moto G, S5 Neo, S6, and Sony M4 Aqua will be worse than the LG G4.

If you get it be sure to get one manufactured in/after September, the early models have a faulty motherboard that causes a bootlop that kills the phone after a couple of weeks or months. LG will change your phone for free if you are affected but you will have to waste times sending it and waiting for the replacement. Also, don't get the plastic ones, they look and feel cheap as shit.

Are phones on contract that bad?

I've been using a 2013 Moto G for almost 2 years, I've been fooling around with roms and kernels before it (Nexus S, Galaxy S) but now I honestly just need a smartphone that werks.
I've never owned a recent flagship and an Italian carrier is offering the S7 for 33 €/month with a decent data plan. 30 month long contract. They replace the screen in case of accidents for something like 59 euros.

Should I go for it? I'd have the option to swap it for the next flagship after a year with a minor fee.
>>
>>53568833
http://time.com/3732923/cell-phone-plans-two-year-contract/
>>
>>53568893

I know all of that. Here in europoor countries most of us don't even use any kind of contract, we use prepaid SIMs and you manually charge with the credit needed for the data plan. I've been paying 13 €/month for 1000 texts (basically unlimited), unlimited calls and 3 GB, which is a pretty good plan at least for Italy.
The S7 would cost me 20 €/month more.
I just don't really want to pay 600 upfront for the phone that I could drop it and ruin it
>>
>>53568981

What I'm saying is that this contract is really less a fuck-you-in-the-ass kind of deal than your usual contract.
No activation fees, no upfront payment, 20 €/m + my current data plan, so 20 x 30, you end up paying the S7 600 euros, on top of that you obviously have to add the data plan, which would be 13 x 30, so a total of 990 euros over two and a half years.
>>
>>53568981
>europoor

Everything is more expensive here than the usa
>>
>>53569076
>you end up paying the S7 600 euros

This is literally never the case. If so everyone would get a contract and no one would buy it without contract. In the end you will always pay 200-300 more, for services, getting the phone instantly, and calling/sms/data.

Also there might be hidden costs in the contract.
>>
>>53568833
If you want a flagship, this is a good deal. But what do you guys do with your phones? Mine has specs like a moto g and it still feels overpowered
>>
>>53569192

No. This is it. 20 €/month. Extra fees only in case you change carrier during the contracts. I read everything. We don't get fucked as soon as we sign anything like amerikunts.

>>53569223

I don't necessarily need a flagship, but I like photography and I've never owned a flagship with a truly beautiful screen and camera.
I know pictures are still gonna be shit compared to my entry level dslr and a decent prime lens, but still.

I also like the fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone.

My Moto G is fine but ram management could be be lot better.
>>
>>53569343
>I've never owned a flagship with a truly beautiful screen

You know the s7's screen is small as fuck right? You won't enjoy a screen that small.

Get the s7 edge, the difference is day and night. Or get an s6 edge plus, beautiful massive amoled screen, has everything the s7 has except waterpoof and sd. Cheaper than both of the above, and arguably better (bigger screen).

Try it out yourself in stores and see the difference.

I personally don't like samshit, neither do I like the edge feature, and the 6p is too expensive in europe, so I'm buying a huawei mate 8. It's basically 6p + sd card slot and actually affordable in europe, unlike the 6p
>>
>>53569343
Also, with a case, as long as you're not an idiot you won't drop and break it. Get a flip case if you're that scared.
>>

Anyone else with a white Nexus 5x notice how cheap the back is? It's already chipped and has weird yellow stains on it. I'm not some slob, I take care of my shit. Very disappointed. Got it at release, already looking for an LG G4 on ebay to replace it.
>>
>>53547417

S7 Looks pretty awesome, great size for one handed use and battery. I would definetely put a rom on it though I doubt you would want to do that for a work phone unless you can keep it.

Maybe try getting something that will get android updates if you aren't able to put a ROM on it. Such as a nexus device or motorolla (unsure about them since lenovo takeover) and LG.

32gb is required IMO, and don't expect to take more then a couple minutes of 4k footage on it without wiping everything to save space. Otherwise it's a decent phone. If you don't want to take video at all or store anything on it then you could get the 16gb version. But if you don't want to use the camera then there's not much reason to buy a 5x in the first place.

New critical security hole in android.
everyone affected that isn't on kernel 3.18, that includes all Nexus devices:
http://source.android.com/security/advisory/2016-03-18.html

So Galaxy S7 is more secure than a Nexus 6p in this instance.
You can likely expect some new towelroot like rooting app that works on most devices.
>>
>>53571157
>You can likely expect some new towelroot like rooting app that works on most devices.
nope, patched for all Samsung devices like a year ago. See PingPong exploit.

>April 2014: silently fixed in upstream linux as a common bug

I don't take 4K footage and I'm OK with 5MP, problem with MotoG is 1 GB of RAM and lack of future updates from Lenovo

But 32 GB N5X is 349 so that wouldn't be a problem, is just that I didn't planned about updating a phone that is not even a year old

Got a V10 a couple of weeks ago, and so far I'm enjoying it. Camera is really great, screen looks fantastic, and the phone is quick and responsive. Just a few issues that aren't enough to turn me away from the phone, but can get annoying.

1. The speakers are very hit and miss. Sometimes they're loud and sound nice, and other times its very hard to hear.

2. The fingerprint sensor takes 2-3 tries to open the phone sometimes.

3. When the main screen is off the second screen light bleeds a bit.

32gb Nexus6p user here. Love the phone, and it's tougher than it looks, desu. Only complaint is that marshmallow handles some permissions things differently, and breaks instagram and a few others.

regardless, pros: great handset, beast battery life. heavy usage, 2 days without a charge, generally.
cons: fuckin huge, not for onehanding at all, and hard to find a place to keep it on you, unless you have a manpurse or something

Hello, as a former LG Employer and part of the LG G5 Team I will take tell you somethings about the modules work.

Every module will be approved by LG. Giving each one a very unique ID or "header" to be recognized. All the modules are required to have the LG Logo.

You can't change the lower part of the phone and include one with a custom logo because it won't work, LG told us to make the phone fail and don't boot at all if it recognizes a third party "adapted" to prevent damaging the phone.

All the modules will have be in a LG Box that will match the LG G5 box.

And yeah, the LG G5 looks very alike to the Nexus 5X, but we like to call it "LG Nexus 6P" as an internal joke.

Have a good night.
>>
Little hardware help.. I dropped my LG G3 and the touch screen isn't very responsive anymore. I have to hold down the button I want to press for a good 2+ seconds until it registers.

Anyone know what this might mean?
>>
>>53580523
does that mean that you bastards arent going to release a front facing speaker module?

can you tweak with this thing like the g3?

does that mean we wont get third party chink modules because you jews have to license everything?
>>
>>53580636
>does that mean we wont get third party chink modules because you jews have to license everything?
Sadly yes, let's say "XXXX" company releases a third party adapter/module that works with the phone tricking it into thinking that it's a official one, LG will tell us to release a update or patch (.kdz as we call it) to break those headers and leave the module useless.

>can you tweak with this thing like the g3?
I don't know what do you mean, hardware or software mods?

>does that mean that you bastards arent going to release a front facing speaker module?
There's a list of modules already approved, that are already in production. LG told us to focus on the average-user experience, meaning that we have to fix all the flaws that the LG G4 team had. The first modules post are audio and camera related, the most "advanced" ones will be released in the last part of this year and the next one. The team will be divided, some of us will be working on that and some other will be moved into the next phone with new people.
>>
>>53580523
>>53580763
I apologize for my English, not my first language, but I'm sure you get the idea.
>>
>>53580763
>and some other will be moved into the next phone with new people

You mean the next v10?
>>
>>53580849
In part, it's related with the LG V10 and the LG Flex 2.
>>
>>53580523
>Every module will be approved by LG.

I mean, wasn't this always going to be the case? I feel like it was pretty obvious that LG would keep tight control over what modules would be used on the phone.

My question is about phone cases. Is LG making a case for the G5 where you don't have the take off the whole case every time you swap modules?
>>
>>53581051
Not really, the only official "case" at the moment it's the Quick Cover, But LG can call at any moment and tell us to start a modular case.
>>
Is it worth buying a Moto G3 now or should I wait for a possible new release? I want to keep the phone for atleast 2 years
>>
>>53581152
So I'm guessing that if you have the camera or audio module on that the case won't fit anymore? Hopefully there will be a 3rd party case out that will accommodate that.
>>
>>53581264
The first modules will be bigger and heavier, they will be most likely redesigned and re-released in a couple of months. I highly recommend you to wait and skip the first modules wave. They will be most likely used to test the usage and work to improve the new ones.
>>
>>53580763
i mean software mods

with the likes of sameshit locking down everything, id like to get a unlockable bootloader and easy root despite it probably fucking up with the modular stuff
>>
I haven't updated CM on my Galaxy S3 in over 3 years. Will I have problems with slow performance or something if I update to Marshmallow? I'm worried that the newest versions of Android might not perform as well on older devices.

>>

>>
>>53581680
A couple of US and EU carriers asked us for locked down versions with permanently locked bootloader. And as far as I know they were talking with LG about exclusive software updates, I mean you can't install "A" carrier update on a "B" carrier phone.

I would be surprised if they approve or not that deal. But again, I would recommend you to wait a couple of months, it's worth it :)
