kek, you dont need to install arch to learn how your system works, just build a lfs system a few times and thats it, you learn shit using arch, lfs or at least gentoo
>>
>>53541469
and after that just return to using normal/stable distros instead of wasting your time

Let's get over the meme that a text based install requires any more thinking or understanding than a gui install.
Running pacstrap from the guide is the same as clicking next.

I used mate up until yesterday, switched to cinnamon, don't know why but think I'll stick with it. Pretty comfy. Just my 2 cents.

KDE is just bloated buggy shit

>>

No, see >>53541841

I meant installing shit that I need, rather than uninstalling shit I don't like I would have to do with KDE. Cinnamon is way less bloated initially.

Running a VM for torrent use only. VM uses a VPN, host doesn't.
>>

Can you still move the panel to the right/left?
>>
>>53542225
What I see is a stock Cinnamon setup, you haven't even touched the panel icons.
>rather than uninstalling shit I don't like I would have to do with KDE. Cinnamon is way less bloated initially.
Then install just Plasma 5 instead of the KDE metapackage.
>>
>>53542255
At the moment, in Cinnamon (or any Gtk3 based DE) you can't. Although there's a fresh pull request for that.
>>
>>53542261
>plasma 5

I'll check it out. Though at the moment, what I've got is what I need. The actual "setup", in regards to packages, isn't stock. If you mean ricing, that's not my thing
>>
>>53542289
Good to know. I used to use Cinnamon, it's pretty comfy. But KDE is just more feature rich.
>>
>>53542323
Also, fuck gtk. Move over to Qt

Stay classy faggots.
>>
>>53542323
It's also more bug rich. And with their current approach to fixing them we might get a stable version of KDE5 sometime in 2025. Of course, that's when Qt6 gets released and the whole code rewritten from scratch...

Xfce is where DEs are (still) really at.

>>53542340

At this point KDE4 is quite stable, honestly. I like Plasma but i'll wait till it is stable enough to get into debian stable repository.

No one forces me to upgrade here on linux, I'll stick to kubuntu 14.04 for a long time.

Also I hope KDE neon is a step towards the right direction. Because only KDE ecosystem can compete with windows in terms of features. GNOME is ruined by the prajeets at Red Hat

It's also 2 years old and even slower than 5, and misses some quite obvious features like a search function in the application menu. Also for Windows feels, KDE pinned taskbar icon function is pretty damn weak (though at least it's there), Xfce can do it better.

The wiki doesn't explain GRUB very well. I still don't know how the hell to install Arch as my second Linux distro in dual-boot. I've got a 30g volume just sitting there with an unusable Arch install. I'm lost on what to do with a prior Debian install on disk.
Does
 grub-install
after installing
 os-prober
update the already installed GRUB, or am I completely wrong there?

Not him, but XFCE has done me good. Only thing is trouble with desktop specific apps like Okular, but CoolReader works great and there's a decent replacement for just about everything else, so that doesn't really matter to me.
>>
>>53542804

Used Ubuntu, then OpenSUSE (both years ago), then Mint, then Ubuntu (recently), then Debian, then Arch, then Fedora.

I'm now back to Arch because it's the best distro (IMO) out of the bunch.

I Installed it the "proper" way 3 times before switching to Fedora. Then used Architect yesterday because I needed my system up and running ASAP. Literally no fucking difference to installing it "properly".

Arch is great. First time I had it, I had it for a couple of weeks. It fucked up less times in those 2 weeks than Fedora did in 3 days.

Just installed arch on Macbook Pro mid 2010.

I'm using only using awesome window manager with compton composition manager and chromium and the cpu is already getting hot. Why does this happen? OS X can easily handle several tabs without the fans going wild. Should I scale down the cpu? I am satisfied with the RAM usage

>>
>>53542583
It's easy enough. You only need to know that if you have os-prober you can just install grub and make a config file for it. after you reboot your other os's will be missing but just boot to Arch, run mkconfig again, and you're all set.

Prime example; Before installing arch I never knew what xinitrc done, or even existed.

With Arch one's introduced to it by force.
>>
>>53543239
Except configuring xinitrc is usually just done as a timesink. It's not a useful skill outside of really niche hobbyist scenarios.
>>
>>53543281

You cleary know more about this than I.

Alll I'll say is I learned more than I initially knew by installing Arch than I did before doing so. I suppose mainly becuase the wiki explains why you're doing it, not just how.

But granted, installing arch doesn't make one a Linux god, as some people imply.
