Fedora and Debian both work great and I've been happy using them.

Manjaro Cinnamon. Say what you want, it's comfy as fuck.

Ubuntu 14.04. Only just learning.
I used Mint something like 6 years ago but never really stuck with it. While the interface was nice, I didn't notice any benefit over Windows at the time.
I'm not particularly fond of Unity so far, but it's been much easier to learn back-end development on Linux than on Windows. It seems every turn I take, somebody's trying to teach a class using OSX/terminal, so portions end up lost in translation between terminal->CL

Do you really need to ask why? Have you ever used an automated package manager tool, and then compare it to compiling and packaging the thing yourself?
>>
Debian GNU/Linux on all my machines
>>
>>53537376
Automated is faster but compiling from source isn't much more troublesome either.

Unless you frequently tinker with the source of everything you compile, I see no reason why one would. You could do that on any distro anyway.

So why Gentoo/slackware?
And why did you bundle them together, what is so similar about them?

>>
>>53537468
The only similar thing between them is that you need to compile your programs (in the case of Slack unless installing from the repo although only basic stuff is in there). The point of this is simplicity, debloat and optimization.

Yes, you can compile programs in any distro, but not every distribution is focused for it. Chances are you get dependency hell and break your system when not using the automated package manager tool.

I see you're referring to Gentoo?

The whole tearing business is just sad in general. On Linux, you can *only* get reliable tear-free video playback and browsing if you're on nvidia's proprietary drivers.

(AMD basically doesn't support vsync at all)

On Windows, I could not figure out how to get reliable tear-free video playback and browsing at all, even on nvidia drivers.

Every time I dual boot for gaymen, I cringe so hard at just how much my browser tears while scrolling. Things I've never noticed on Linux because it just worked out of the box.

It installs the binaries in the repository, that's all. Note that the repository contents is just what comes pre-installed with the full Slackware installation, and unless you uninstall one of those programs you will never use slackpkg at all.

>>
>>53538133
It's not Gentoo, you manually track and download the dependencies and then compile the program you want, package it and install it with installpkg.

Slackbuilds makes all of this easier, though, so you will just spend around 5 minutes max downloading everything you need.

Fedora. Stable and very up to date. The community is my favorite, and I like the feeling that I can actually contribute. The GNOME experience is second to none.

Ubuntu is a great distro of course, I use that as well. If I didn't want to spend a little time installing non-free repos and configuring after install, I would go Ubuntu.

>>53537026
Mint was the distro I used the longest at first. I'd dabbled, but stuck with mint for a while. One thing to keep in mind is that the GUI is pretty changeable. Don't like Unity? Use a different Desktop Environment. I'm a fan of xfce. but that's just because I'm familiar with it.

I used Ubuntu as my main OS for a while because I wanted something that "just werks" but it had a lot of weird issues. I think next I'll just go straight Debian.

Just general programming I prefer on linux. The system calls seem nicer, you can do it all through the terminal, it's great.

They both use musl for their c library instead of glibc, which makes them crazy small and fast. Alpine can't handle UEFI for some reason, which hinders it for desktops, where people like multibooting. you can't just copy a kernel and use it, you chroot , generate the initramfs that matches your kernel version and then reboot after generating the grub entries.
