Takes three times less than MP3, while retaining the same quality. And it's open-source.
>>
It offers better quality audio at lower bitrates. The only thing its not best at is very low bitrate audio which is used mainly for voice calling but it manages to get so close it's probably worth it anyway considering it's an open standard.
>>
It's the best audio codec out there despite being open sores.

It's an audiophile meme and muh filesize.

Even if it's good, you have to reencode your music and be autistic downloading from lossless sources.

I don't care if you do that. But yeah, that's it

An open source, royalty free, high quality lossy audio codec. It can handle a vast variety of bitrates while generally being the most compression efficient encoder regardless of the bitrate used or content being encoded. It's also extremely low on latency. It's all around the best lossy audio codec.

MP3 is deprecated.

Wait, MP3 is closed source?
>>

MP3 is/was patent encumbered. There are open source and even FOSS implementations of it but to use it commercially you need to pay licensing fees.

Actually it is, 512 vbr complexity 10 opus is considered 99.999% archive quality.

So not archive quality then.
>>
>>53537592
Not 100% but in order to achieve 100% archive quality you have to use FLAC which can range from 1-1.2 Mbps depending on music. With Opus you save 50% space compared to FLAC while maintaining very near archive quality.

This has nothing to do with the audible transparency range of Opus (96-128 vbr complexity 10) btw.

Relative quality is irrelevant when comparing lossy and lossless. Lossless is the only format you should be using for archival, editing or conversion. Lossy is for listening ONLY.

MP3 is patent-encumbered. You need to pay licensing fees to use it.

Opus is royalty-free. That's the big difference between free codecs (like VP8, VP9, Opus) and proprietary codecs (like MP3, AAC, AVC, HEVC) - since even despite this, open source implementations of the latter exist. (And are better than all known proprietary implementations)

Some would argue otherwise. If you transcode a 128 vbr complexity 10 opus file from a lossless source and a 512 vbr opus complexity 10 file, both resulting encodes will literally sound the same because of how extremely tiny and inaudible generational loss the Opus file will give.

However editing should always lossless audio files because of generational loss that will happen.

But for all practical purposes Opus is an excellent format for archiving, listening, and conversion (one time though).

There's no such thing as “Archive quality”. There's only “good enough”.

If your noise floor is so slow that you could re-encode the song a hundred thousand different times and still remain completely inaudible, then it's good enough for archival.
