I sent them a resume 3 years after I finished my degree, I didn't think I had that much potential, my first job was at a startup where I was being underpaid but I did develop an open source library and put my github on my resume so I guess that helped.
Anyway once you are talking to a recruiter, it's pretty much up to you. You'll get a bunch of technical interviews and that's what really matters. BTW don't hesitate to tell the recruiter if you have social impairments or something. They'll accommodate, within reason.
