Welcome to /flt/, we are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Did you not notice when changing this from simply "Install Linux on a VM", the fact that you have to qualify what GNU/Linux even is (an OS) means you probably shouldn't be using it in a thread that is friendly to newcomers?

What point is there in swapping to Linux, most top-tier professional applications run exclusively on Windows, you can't really game on Linux, Windows has many built in applications that Linux can never have (for example, right clicking an MKV file in Explorer gives me the option to cast it directly to my TV, that's a native feature and is insanely useful.)

That's not to say Linix isn't useful for say Server applications and the like, but for daily running you'd be better off with a Mac than you would switching to Linux.

Unless I'm missing something.

Annoying for me because I don't use a file manager. Technically I have Thunar installed but it's last resort for when I ever need it. You're right it is a huge nuisance.

So both my partitions are NTFS, I never dual-booted before but I want to try it, as I want to use one distribution for development work. ( using Linux/GNU on laptop ).

I have no experience with it, what should I do to split a new partition from D without formatting the whole hard disk?

How much space do you guys suggest to allocate for that new partition exclusively dedicated to Linux.

Seriously. Wtf GNOME, why don't they just re-add the fucking GIMP filepicker (yes GTK actually GOT thumbnail preview, but only for GIMP, since it was made for it).
>>
>>53536071
Default gnome stuff is generally trash.
Nautilus is completely gimped to the point that even for someone who has never used the terminal before, they would have less trouble just fucking learning it than trying to do basic stuff with stock nautilus now.

I generally like the desktop look, but actual gnome programs are shit. Another example is the way they changed the status menus and stuff in gedit. I'm actually tempted to just use notepadqq instead.
>>
>>53536085
With just about any modern desktop, you can run Windows inside of something lightweight like Arch. If you have so much as a spare onboard graphics, you can do a PCI passthrough on QEMU, you can wind up running just about anything with about 99% the efficiency of running it natively (you have to use one of your cores for Linux, but that doesn't really matter too much with a quad-core or better).
The benefit of this is that you can create a copy profile of your fresh install and if it gets some nasty malware, as tends to happen with Windows whenever someone figures out the NSA backdoor, you can just delete the bad profile, copy the good profile and transfer any backup data to the first backup copy, and start using the first backup.
>>
>>53536154
not everybody relies on free software on their machine. rms for example even uses a free bios.
>>53536172
just shrink it by the amount of space you need from inside windows. most beginner distros do the partitioning for you and will detect windows and not destroy anything.

A couple of years back I used Firefox with the KDE file picker patch and honestly, I prefer the default GTK one. Only showing one preview at a time makes sure that I don't fail to recognise any one image as I swiftly browse through the list. With the KDE file picker, I had to slow down horribly to make sure I didn't miss checking any of the thumbnails.

Of course, since people want a thumbnail view, I do think they should add one, and I'll be happy if they do as long as the current mode remains largely untouched. But I encourage people to see if they would actually prefer it before madly parroting the popular opinion.

It really is the little things, like notepad(++/qq) having built-in (graphical) compare that you can toggle with keyboard shortcuts, rather than having to open meld in another window when using vim/gedit.

Also I end up doing a lot with Android Studio, or various other IDEs that do much hidden shit in the background you enter a world of pain just trying to edit the text files externally.
At least the functionality in graphical editors is somewhat similar, what I don't want to have to do is learn vim but still remember all the GUI shortcuts as well.

You can also open vim in split-screen mode, with the -O option:-

vim -O file1 [file2 ...]

To then turn on diff mode, you need to run the :diffthis command in each pane.

Another use-case scenario, is if you've already got one file open in vim, and you want to open and compare it against another. Then you can use the following vim commands:-

:vs otherfile (open otherfile in vertical split screen)
:diffthis (turn on diff mode in original file)
Ctrl+w l (swap to newly opened file)
:diffthis (turn on diff mode in opened file)

You can then turn off diff mode in each pane with the vim command :diffoff.

EDIT
And the other standard one that hasn't been mentioned:-

vim -d file1 [file2 ...]

This is equivalent to calling vimdiff directly.

Also vimdiff file1 [file2 ...]

I'm talking specifically about the removal of type-ahead search.
The gnome devs are of the attitude that:
>most people want to search the entire tree rather than find the first file in the cd starting with that letter and highlight it, when you start typing

Changing the default option is stupid enough, but they removed the option completely to reenable type-ahead search.
As soon as it become easier to just install another file manager than to enable options in nautilus, I generally lost faith in the gnome devs.

'Unable to load library 'freetype'" UnsatisfiedLinkError exception

'Could not initialize class de.intarsys.cwt.freetype.Freetype' NoClassDefFoundError exception.

The solution to the problem is described here:

https://sourceforge.net/p/pdfpresenter/discussion/1245778/thread/785dafd6/

"The problem is that pdf presenter does not find the library. [...]

You can simply change the startMac.command by adding the line "export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/X11/lib/" after the first line (see below). This sets the library path. it works for me."

Obviously, this solution is for MAC users. The folder /usr/X11/lib does not exist in my file system.

Pulseaudio handles multiple sources, does the mixing and then sends one signal to alsa which passes it to sound card.

you don't need to use CMD at all. you obtain installation media of the distro you choose and boot from it directly through BIOS or UEFI.

What's the difference between "&" and ";" in sh?
I know that both chain commands (with "&&" and ";;" chaining them sequentially), but what's actually different between them? I know that appending & to a command keeps the terminal open (similar to ^Zing and running 'bg'/'fg'), but ; doesn't, and that ; is used in loops/etc. while & isn't.

Probably not. Already installed ubuntu, now installing Arch. One more question, when duel booting Arch do I need to create and mount a boot partition? It should use the boot stuff installed by ubuntu already shouldn't it?
>>
>>53540854
It should use the boot stuff for Ubuntu if you want to boot Ubuntu.

That being said if you want to do some fancy UEFI tricks you can throw the Arch kernel/initramfs into the same boot partition as Ubuntu's, and then just create separate booting profiles in your efi loader.
>>
>>53540759
; simply ends the statement, and runs the next bit as if its on a new line
& actually applies logic, but you can just use a program running as a part of the logic.

When you do:
>program1 & programb

It will run program1 and then program2, and if both of their returns are "false" (return zero for success) then overall it evaluates to false.
However, most people will use this syntax to take advantage of short-circuit logic.

when you AND two logic statements, if the first is negative then it doesnt matter what the second is, the answer must also be negative, so the second is never evaluated.
What it means is if program1 is run and is successful, you dont actually need to run program2 because the logic result will always be 0.
If program1 was not successful, then you need to run program2 still to determine the logic result.
>>
>>53540969
Interesting. So does that mean that if I could theoretically use || in the same way?

Well I just checked and it turns out I can. Neat.
>>
>>53535938

That's a non-free bird
>>
>>53541002
Of course, it completely depends on what you want to achieve though.

If you want the first to run, then only the second if the first fails, you use &&
If you want the first to run, then only the second if the first succeeds, you use ||

Seems confusing, but returning 0 for success is much more logical as there is usually one way to success but many possible ways to fail.

Kinda wish the pasta in OP didn't recommend against overwriting windows for Linux. I hate windows. One week in Linux has me wishing I didn't set up dual boot. Really don't feel like reinstalling and setting everything up again. I'll hold out a bit longer but the pasta should read : "if you don't play games and don't need Adobe suite for work, GO BALLS DEEP!"
>>
I've tried using Ubuntu Mate which uses Gnome 2.

I dislike the GUI because the close button when you maximize a window isn't clickable if you put your mouse on the top right of your screen. This ergonomic issue is a pretty big annoyance for me. You should be able to close a window without having to be precise with your mouse, just by flicking it to the top right.

Are all GNU/Linux GUIs like this? Any suggestions for distros with GUIs that don't do this?

Is it possible to run a "nested" gnu screen session?

I have screen set up on a remote box, I have a local screen session going and in one of the screen windows i ssh into the remote. Then i run screen on the remote. Just boot Gparted or whatever from USB, remove the Windows partitions and resize the Linux ones. Operation might take a while, so let it run overnight or over the day while you're away.
>>
>>53541344
>Reinstalling
Nigga just extend your partition. Wipe windows, and let linux use the rest of the free space.
You could even make a new partition for media or whatever.

If anything, the main reason to dual-boot first is the ensure your hardware doesn't have any problems, and then to move your stuff across to linux before destroying the windows partition.
Some people have a single large 2TB or whatever drive, so backing up and formatting is not the best solution.
>>
>>53541394
most people that worry about it don't use a mouse to close stuff. in most DEs you can close stuff with alt+f4

You already have grub installed (well I hope you do) so windows has nothing to do with the boot selection anyway.

Who has Grand Theft Auto Five running via Wine? Preferably Mac OS X, but Linux should work too.

Also: Let's imply I have $10. Who should I give the money to, when I'd want an easier and better working Wine? PlayOnLinux, wine or Crossover?
I guess wine would be the best option, right? It's cross platform and open and get's used by all three mentioned projects. However, Winetricks and Crossover are really worth their money, too, as they make using wine easy.

I guess I'll give one third of that money to codeweavers and two thirds to the wine project, as I need Mac OS X and Linux to work with it.

I'm trying to install Krita in debian unstable but trying to do so comes up with

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
krita : Depends: calligra-libs (= 1:2.8.5+dfsg-1.2) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libexiv2-13 but it is not installable
Depends: libilmbase6 (>= 1.0.1) but it is not installable
Depends: libopenexr6 (>= 1.6.1) but it is not installable

Then, trying to install calligra-libs directly results in

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
calligra-libs : Depends: libilmbase6 (>= 1.0.1) but it is not installable
Recommends: fonts-lyx but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: libqca2-plugin-ossl but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Trying to install libilmbase6 reveals that it has been replaced with libilmbase6v5 which is already installed, but calligra apparently doesn't see. Is there anything I can do for calligra to see it?

This also happens with libopenexr6, while libexiv2-13 doesn't even have an installation candidate.

File extensions don't have the same weight they do on windows.

gcc by default compiles to a.out for example, which you would run just by doing
/a.out in the terminal

Instead of getting that silly "are you sure you want to run this" dialogue, whenever you download files from the web, by default they are not runnable.
In order to run the file, you have to add execute permissions to the file for your user.

tl;dr you can "execute" anything, it just wont do anything most of the time. Good default permissions stop you from running stuff that will wreck your shit.

Doesn't mpc have an insert command now¿ Should be easy to write your own command to do it anyway

Only if you are hibernating then booting into a different one ...
>>
>>53546454
ls | fgrep "thing"

or
find -name "thing*"

find is a lot more powerful than piping through fgrep or similar, but you might not need it.

They are using a font with the â–ºsymbol that takes up the whole vertical space, and modifying their $PS1 variable (the thing which determines how the prompt looks) to use that and have fancy colours.
Some people refer to it as the powerline prompt, after the vim addon which does something similar.

Sometimes if it is just packaging sit complaining but I'm pretty sure the linking will run fine I use apt-get download then dpkg -i to unpack the purchase package in place. Doesn't get configured but meh

I fixed it by checking the github and setting the launch property
__GLVND_DISALLOW_PATCHING=1 %command%

to the game

Why is dwb listed as [masked] in gentoo portage? Is it botnet? Dillo browser which sounds similar is not listed as [masked]
Gentoo noob here so not quite sure what the masked shit is all about. Currently im running links2 as my main browser but i'm interested in other lightweight minimal browsers

I think he means using a bin folder to host scripts.

That sounds cool i was thinking about that today. I have some shell scripts i've written that i use to automate certain things and at the moment i've just been putting the executables in /usr/bin but yeah i would like to have a way to keep my homemade shit separate from legit stuff i've downloaded.

Best option for running cs6 illustrator and photoshop on linux? I'm running gentoo on a thinkpad x220

From what I know my options are

1. Dual boot windows - but i don't want to have to switch back and forth all the time
2. VM via kvm and qemu running windows
3. Wine.

Currently I run CS6 on a mac so I would also be cool with running a vm of os x but not sure how feasible that is. It seems to be easier to run windows as a vm.

I played with linux enough to comfortably use it as my sole OS now. What (practical/employable) skills can I take from this? I'm looking at the link below so far

Ahh, Just fresh installed debian jessie. Wanted to try something new, So went CLI only then installed openbox. Picking up some sexy gtk themes atm, Was wondering how you can install infinality font's on debian? The last guide i found was from 2013. or is there a method for good looking font's that "just werk"?

New to debian, just installed awesome wm and now I'm going through configuring stuff. I noticed whenever I close my laptop lid my entire pc freezes and I'm kinda confused as to why that is. Googling the problem just gives me ubuntu users with the same problem.

If you dual boot, you can use that partition as the qemu disk, so you can run it in a VM and boot into it if you need to.

This annoys me too.
Some DE's let you middle click on the task bar to close and that is slightly better.
But for the close window thing I do have a solution.
I make a .desktop file (/usr/share/applications) which calls alt+f4 or whatever is the hotkey for close window. (xdotools)
Then it will appear in the application menu and I can drag it to the bar and place it in the top right corner.
I remove title bars when an application is maximized to free up some space and avoid having multiple close buttons.

How do I do
pragma table_info(X)
without it looking like complete unreadable garbage in sqlite3? I want an actual table shaped table.

if there's useful advice then use it, this sort of stuff is distro-agnostic also

Googling problems, unless distro specific, will always give you mostly ubuntu users thanks to the number of people using it.

Why the FUCK doesn't Arch Linux compile Vim with xterm clipboard enabled by default?
It's a fucking useful feature, I don't want to have to maintain my vim version manually just for clipboard support.
>>
>>53549320
But they do
>>
>>53549363
No they don't.
Install vim from the official repo.
Then do
vim --version | grep xterm_clipboard

It should be a minus.
