So I've decided to install Windows 7 in a Virtual Machine in my Linux install.

What practical applications are there for installing Windows in a VM?
>>
>>53535019
>I'm going to install something I don't need
>why should I install this thing I don't need?

Do ever listen to yourself?
>>
>>53535039
What I'm asking is, is there cool stuff I can do with this?

Like would I be able to play Windows games at decent performance?
>>
If you have a decent computer, using some of the less powerful Adobe tools

I still found it to work better than Wine
>>
>>53535019
>What practical applications are there for installing Windows in a VM?

What?
For install windows in a VM?
You mean software to install virtual machines?
>>
Has anyone tried installing Windows XP in a vm for fun and Nostalgia?
>>
>>53535053
Fuck off

Why the fuck would you do this when running the OS on bare steel will automatically give you performance?

Just what the fuck is going on ITT? You sound like one of those fucklords on /diy/ who buys an arduino, then starts a thread asking "wut do?"
>>
>>53535073
Wow fuck you too.
>>
>>53535053
>Like would I be able to play Windows games at decent performance?
only if you have two gpus and use gpu passthrough
>>
>>53535070
I have an XP VM for playing with malware and gayman on GTA:SA. That's literally it.
>>
>>53535076
Uh what? Do you think you would get better performance running a game with WINE or in a VM?
>>
>>53535076
This is simply shortened to fuck off.

OP is so retarded that he installed an OS for no reason. Now he thinks that doing so should open up awesome software opportunities.

>OP (No you) is a fucking retard
>>
japanese ero games.
Thats about it but for those you generally want an xp install with jp locale.
Maybe some windows exclusive softwares that don't have sufficient representation in linux by being inferior counterparts or just plain shit.
Perhaps some .net stuff that just sucks ass in mono or when run through wine with .net installed in it.
>>
>>53535103
Holy shit you're mad lmao.
>>
>>53535095
You are adding a level of complexity to the windows VM.

Fun fact
>There is no such thing as GPUthroughPut with VMs.
Unless you run datacentre solutions you will not get gaming performance on a virtual level.
>Also with a datacentre GPU pass through, you need more then one GPU.

At this point, WINE is less complex and would operate much faster then any VM. Though kvm is very optimized.
>>
>>53535123
Yeah because something so stupid is an example over people not being educated in common sense and linux.
>>
>>53535155
Damn dude are you like a genius or something? You sound so smart! Why don't you hide the thread and stop replying if it triggers you so much.
>>
>>53535123
A quick fucking google would give you the reason why running a VM in linux and then using that VM to game is not a good idea.

It is the same in windows. Running a Windows VM on windows would not mean you get gaming performance on the VM.

Further googling

>>
>>53535226
It's a VM, i can just reinstall and start over :)
>>
>>53535229
Shit you are retarded.

Go having fun with your legit gaming VM bro.

Don't forget that doing cmd > useradd > system1 > prID 1 > delete system.
Is good for your VM.

>Legit hacker you're bro
>>
>>53535214
If you're going to do this either consider a VNC server or if you want the rdp route you will likely need to patch your shit to accept multiple connections at once.
Either way I can't recommend it, virtual or not. There is a very high chance you will get v& from the resulting google searchs that are inevitable, mandatory even.
>>
>>53535242
>Use your IP address to hack the original VM
>Spread attacks from your VM to other machines
According to logs
>You openly provided a hacking platform to 4chan and are then prosecuted because of the hacks.
>>
>>53535249
You don't get v& from google searches.
>>
>>53535257
This is even made clear in the computer and abuse hacks.

Servers that were exploited and then provided as a zombie. Owners of said system would be asked if they prevented attacks as best as they could. If no one could be tracked, the original server owner would then be precessed with careless operations of online system.

>You can be charged for the attacks since you're providing the system to do malicious things with it.

OP is super fucking retarded.

>Le VM gaming meme
>>
>>53535257

You have it backwards. You want windows to be your main and unix to be your VM. And have different VMs for work, dev, and porn browsing.

Running Office 2016.

After you disable graphics acceleration in the settings.
>>
>>53535278

I am able to play games perfectly in WINE, whereas a Virtual machine would just poop itself.
>>

Sights you thread on 4chan. 4chan by law is required to keep in cache of 3-6 days all threads.

Retarded thread OP.
>>
>>53535298

>>53535053

Gaming is literally the only practical application has for this abomination of an idea.
>>
I installed WindowsXP with Virtualbox a few days ago, making sure to not install any of the networking stuff at all so that it's an entirely pure sandbox that can't be tainted by a barrage of worms that would likely infect it if it were online for even a few seconds.

I'm using it entirely for old hentai games. I don't want to have to set my locales to Japanese and install all the rpg maker support files and such on my main Windows 7 installation. I just boot up that WindowsXP virtualization when I want to play that stuff.
>>
What should I do now? :D
>>
>>53535287
>different VMs for work, dev, and porn browsing
Holy shit, why?

Stick to Linux as main OS and use the Winkek WM to test Windows-specific stuff. Faster, more secure and stable OS should be the main one, unless you are a gaymor.
>>
>>53535336
Where did you find an XP iso?? I'd like to install XP for nostalgia sake.
>>
>>53535338
virtualize gentoo in it
>>
>>53535315
>Enabling 3D functions would only allow 265MB of video ram to the VM.

VMs are not for fucking gaming.
Even direct acceleration would make a VM not use direct hardware.

>VMware Hypervisors and hypervisor
These are the only solutions to using pass through GPU features.
>>
>>53535349
It's the same pirated XP Pro cd I burnt probably 12 years ago and used for computers I had back then.
>>

They also require education and are bare metal systems.
>>
Rosetta stone? I still havnt tried it with wine. But a VM might be an OK way to run it
>>
Just get 2pcs, the Linux one doesn't have to be powerful. Best solution.
>>
>>53535367
I want you to
>Install debian
>Install virtman

virtman or virtualbox. Both communicate with kvm.
>>

Sure, but would one of them be installing it for "nostalgic" purposes? Fuck. No.
>>
>>53535076
>Why the fuck would you do this when running the OS on bare steel will automatically give you performance?

Because snapshots. Because I like to keep spying OS off when I don't play games. Because I don't need to ever install windows again: I installed once, activated it and now I have an image which I can use no matter what hardware I have.

I really don't get it why I should have windows installed on bare metal this day and age.
>>
>>53535147

What, how retardoo you are? I've been running kvm qemu passthrough for half a year now with no problems.
>>
>>53535475
Thats nice, and completely unrelated to the practicality of running games in a VM that that other guy, and OP, has alluded to.
>>
>>53535475
You well never get performance of that to a bare metal install.

>Being this retarded to not duel boot.
>Being so retired to think gaming on a VM and a viable option to bare metal.
>Not watching what you download

You deserve cancer and computer viruses,
>>
>>53535504
Pass through.

Now I know you are full of shit.
But before I say you're retarded, are you using more then one GPU?

>>
>>53535504
>What, how retardoo you are?
>I've been running kvm qemu passthrough

There is no option with qemu to allow direct hardware access you retard.
Using a low level kernel in a paravirtualization and direct hardware access is fucking bullshit.

I asked if you had two GPU or more.
You cannot pass through on a single GPU since the host locks it to the main system.

I am also a red hat engineer so I know everything with RHEL and that involves the use of KVM and hardware throughput.
>>
>>53535830

sure thing buddy

how's skylake's acs support?
>>
>>53536232
Well if you use skylake with RHEL you deserve to have issues.

When I said I am a RHEL engineer, I meant I do not use shitty consumer grade hardware.

The only CPUs I see is Xerons. I would openly question anyone's intelligence that use skylake on server systems.
>>
>>53536394
>Xerons haswell.

Did you not read about skylakes work load issues?
>>

>>
>>53536423
First off mate.
I believe I had managed to think you were OP - The one that made this thread.

2nd. I also thought you were the one that I asked about using more then one GPU to. I never had a reply.

3rd.
You seem to lack any education. Xerons are heavily used in the server farm as work. Design considerations were
>>Work loads
>>Heats
>>Energy

The defect in skylakes design were going to impact the performance of the servers that receive check calls.
You question my statements, but the end result was you thinking I really don't work with high end RHEL servers.

I would like to ask you something.

If you have kvm on 5 systems running XERON hardware. What system configuration file would allow the SAP systems to talk to each regardless of memory considerations?

How does one explain a job that is pass their educational ability to understand.

>We used RHEL for our cloud solution.
>We use custom applications that run on that cloud's pool.

>Employer wanted a team to create two automatic scripting processes that can easily pool unused hardware and then output a list of statistics based on time, workload, and more.

We were debugging, hence the two days no sleep method.

This is not uncommon for RHEL engineers to work for long hours. Being a RHEL engineer does not also mean that I work directly for Red Hat.

Other then yelling at my employer for giving me a cunt of a job, I come here to tell people they are wrong and retarded. I enjoy the response.
>>
>>53535019
You could run applications that otherwise run poorly or not at all.

Don't expect to do any gaming though, unless you have the hardware needed to do PCI-E passthrough.
>>
>>53536528
You provided enough evidence to me that you use linux/gnu and also attempt to run gaming hardware to virtualise systems.

I used to use VM for porn games because most of the older ones only worked in XP or under. And old games in general. It's not good for anything new.
>>
>>53536611
I like /g/ more. And it's not an attempt, I've successfully ran multiple gaming VMs since last fall. It's no rocket science.

I've built a workstations and servers too with vt-d pci passthrough within last years.

I also use/support/consult on win xp, win 2000, win nt, win vista, win 7, win 10, server 2008, freebsd.. even had a solaris server once many moons ago.

I just wanted to help OP. For free. Unlike rhel engineers and other cucks who just bashed OP.
