Why does mpv freeze whenever I enter fullscreen?
>>
>>53534403
It was very similar with other players/renderer in performance and features 2 years ago.
Now it kills any other ones especially in performance and on windows operating systems.
However I still prefer 3:2 pulldown over interpolation that is too much artificial for me.

Now it seems there are a lot of new mpv based gui players.
It seems that smplayer begins to make things right with mpv.
The wonderful bomi will be developed again and I am happy that its author is well.
The last tweet was very sad.
The mpc-qt is active again, hope its author will make some screenshot.
The gnome-mpv project is very active and great.
Don't forget plex media player that kills kodi internal video player.

After changing to linux I installed mpv to my PC about 1 year ago and since I have no touched any configuration files or settings. Just grab SMplayer. You can choose to have mpv as the player instead of MPlayer.
There's an option to use MPC's interface built-in
>>
>>53534834
No, the most important component of a media player is the renderer, which is what takes decoded frames and schedules+presents them on the screen.
>>
>>53539874
>There's an option to use MPC's interface built-in
doesnt that just open a second window, or am I missing the option? (advanced -> run mplayer in its own window)

Why this and not display-resample? Dropped frames are cancer.

also, why deband=no?

>>
>>53540577
nvidia does multiple driver releases at the same time
AFAIK 355 is essentially stable and 361 is beta
>>
>>53540577

Their versioning is stupid, but needless to say, you can get it.
>>
>>53540641
355 is too old to be ABI-compatible with the current Xorg versions though.

I'll just wait until vulkan support is rolled out to whatever drivers my distro will end up using, and maybe then we can have this discussion again.

Either way, until I can actually _use_ vulkan, expect no progress on vulkan support. For obvious reasons.

What's the point of learning some retarded keybinds or configurations to do such a simple thing.

Why is all the /g/ software always with some obscure retarded keybindings.

Even if they match 100% of the proprietary driver's performance, that will still not mean much because the proprietary AMD drivers _also_ have shit performance (compared to their windows equivalents).

AMD on Linux will be relevant when they can offer:

1. vsync, even in asymmetric multi-monitor configurations
2. OpenGL 4.5 support
3. Support for hardware decoding
4. 10-bit rendering capabilities
5. The ability to function as a whole without randomly segfaulting or crashing (in driver code)

It's nice to see performance being worked on, but that's probably the bit I care the least a bout - rather have drivers that _work_ and are somewhat slower, over drivers that are fast but unusable.

Well, here are my steps to reproduce some of the issues I had with fglrx:

1. Plug in two monitors with different resolutions and framerates
2. Rotate one of the monitors vertically
3. Open firefox in the vertical monitor. Scroll around. You should see absolutely no tearing.
4. Open glxgears (or whatever) in the horizontal monitor. You should see absolutely no tearing and it should sync to your monitor's refresh rate.
On my end, steps 3 and 4 failed. I got tearing on both monitors, in both programs.

1. Open up
/etc/X11/xorg.conf

2. In the
Section "Screen"
, set
DefaultDepth 30

3. In the
SubSection "Display"
, set
Depth 30

4. Restart X.org.
5. Create a 30-bit GLX context and render a grayscale ramp. You should see no banding.
6. Take a 16-bit frame dump of the X window in step 5. Inspect the pixel values. They should be smooth down to 10-bit granularity.
On my end, step 4 failed. I got an error message when trying to start X.org, something like “depth 30 not supported”.

1. Run
mpv -vo xv
on a compatible input file. It should play
On my end, I got a segfault in fglrx.so.

Would you be willing to try out these three things and see if they have really been fixed? I sort of doubt it.

Hence why I switched to nvidia a few years ago and have never seriously considered AMD since then.

Maybe I will, when the issues in >>53550362 get sorted out. But meanwhile, nvidia pretty much “just works” on Linux. (Except when it doesn't, but all of the problems I've encountered can be fixed with a few minutes of google. No crashes so far)

It's 5am here and I'm not on my linux box at the moment to do this, but I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Things I know / have noticed (before I sleep):
>Vsync does work properly for a single monitor setup
>AMD control centre has settings for multi monitor vsync "tear free desktop"
>AMD control centre has setting for 10bpc colour; xorg.conf still shows 24 though

I don't know how I'll get the results back to you though, as this thread will likely be dead in less than 10 hours. (side note: 30bit colour is a waste; 24 bits provides more colours than you're capable of distinguishing)

That's at least a slight step up from what I remembered - in the past, vsync didn't even work in single-monitor setups.

This one actually doesn't work properly. What it does is force your display rates to 30 Hz and introduce like 50ms of input lag. Yeah, no thanks.

>AMD control centre has setting for 10bpc colour; xorg.conf still shows 24 though
That's just marketing bullshit. Unless Xorg is actually running in 30-bit mode, then there's no support for 30-bit rendering. It's plain and simple.

Okay then.

If you can see the brightness steps, you can also see dither patterns. Especially for ordered dithering. (And trust me, I've tried)

Also, not enough things dither properly. In fact, basically nothing does. Imagemagick won't when converting images, for example.

For BT.709 you actually need 10 bits and for BT.2020 you actually need 12-bits for the smallest change to be below the JND.

>>
>>53556919
Why are you dithering? You have enough colours to represent anything you can see. There's no reason to dither other than to reduce the pallet size.

>>53556994
It doesn't matter. With rare exception, people can only distinguish 10 million colours, and 24 bit colour provides 16 million. You can represent anything that you can visibly distinguish with 24 bit colour. Any higher bit depth is purely a placebo, as you cannot distinguish the greater detail present beyond what 24 bit colour could already provide.

(via tearfree) Display refresh rate was locked to the lower of the two (60Hz, other was 75) on both displays. No tearing noticed on either display during the test described. There was definitely some chugging when something demanding was happening on the other screen though.

>xorg 30bd
Same issue as you described, where xorg claims that fglrx doesn't support that bit depth.

Conclusions:
No 10bpc colour support despite options being present in CC (doesn't actually reconfigure Xorg). Not personally an issue, see >>53557787

Vsync across multiple monitors works in some basic capacity, but not to a degree that I would find acceptable. By this I mean that there is indeed vsync for both displays, but not at a consistent refresh rate when under load. Net, it would depend on your use case, but probably wouldn't be good enough if vsync mattered to your case in the first place.

FWIW Nvidia has the same placebo checkbox in their settings dialog, but it also does absolutely nothing except marketing bogus.

You have to edit xorg.conf to get nvidia cards into 30 bit mode, and even then, it's only *fully* supported on Quadro cards (and some older GeForce, but nothing modern like the GTX 9xx series).

On GTX 9xx series cards, you get fully 10-bit support all the way to the backbuffer, but it gets clipped down to 8 bit as part of the actual DisplayPort output.

The spec sheet said 80 GT/s texture performance which is going to be a gigantic bottleneck for mpv.

(mpv performs ~100 billion texture reads per second, go figure)
>>
>>53564476

well i dunno man, but it does it. i understand its a bit like a underclocked 970 with 8gb ram. you can flash a custom bios to it, too, if you want, and i got mine stable at 1220mhz 1.19 volts, but, i reflashed it back to stock just because i didn't want to even risk messing it up. i mostly got it for that partner certified CATIA drivers.

It would be cool if you could run it through some mpv benchmarks. (Basically play a 4K file with
vo=opengl-hq:scale=ewa_lanczos:cscale=ewa_lanczos
and run it through apitrace, then profile the output of that)

If the performance is really better than the spec sheet indicates, I might end up buying one myself.

Sucks being jewed out the ass for 10-bit support, but it doesn't seem like nvidia is interested in adding 10-bit support to geforce any time soon (apart from their dubious marketing lies about how it's supposedly “supported” on non-quadro cards now).

Don't use all the same tonne. Add some chroma, after all you've got 3 channels to work with. Being off true grey by 1 or 2 bits/c isn't noticeable and would resolve your banding issue that only exists in artificially created gradients anyway. In all honesty though, you do have a valid point. When you reduce the tonal range enough and create a large enough perfect gradient you can create visible banding. The reason I dismiss this though, is because it's an unrealistic scenario. There probably are a few (so few they'd probably be countable) instances where this actually has occurred, but not enough for it to be a real concern. By this I mean that the banding seen in whatever material isn't a product of an 8bpc colourspace. It hasn't been an issue in any real video I've watched or anime (despite what /a/ will spout) that I can remember (even the 10bit encodes are played back to me through fglrx/xorg running in 24 bit mode and I haven't noticed banding). If it ever was, I'd be happy to just run it through a debanding filter for what would be a rare instance. For the inflated file size and resource consumption, I don't think it's worth it in just about any real scenarios.

??? This solves banding how? Or do you want me to cherry-pick a test case where it works in order to “prove” 8 bits are sufficient?

>Being off true grey by 1 or 2 bits/c isn't noticeable
Again, it _very clearly_ is.

>and would resolve your banding issue that only exists in artificially created gradients anyway.
Everything a computer renders is artificial. I see plenty of banding throughout the course of my day. It's relevant enough.

>The reason I dismiss this though, is because it's an unrealistic scenario.
Gradients aren't very unrealistic.

>It hasn't been an issue in any real video I've watched or anime (despite what /a/ will spout) that I can remember (even the 10bit encodes are played back to me through fglrx/xorg running in 24 bit mode and I haven't noticed banding). [...]
This sentence seems to arise from a whole heap of misunderstandings that I don't have the space to debunk in this post; but suffice to say, it's completely irrelevant to the discussion at hand.

>6990 running without crossfire enabled.
Oh, it's that old. Well, that looks about right-ish then. Performance is still a bit lower than what I'd expect from a 6990 but I guess that's accountable due to overhead and some fglrx slowdown.
>>
>>53567912
>This sentence seems to arise from a whole heap of misunderstandings that I don't have the space to debunk in this post; but suffice to say, it's completely irrelevant to the discussion at hand.

Let's just take this to the logical conclusion then. If, in application, 24b vs 30b colour makes no perceptible difference, why should one concern themselves with 30b? 30b is indeed superior to 24, but only usefully so under (what I will call) rare conditions. The same is true for 30b vs 36b, and so on unto Nb colour. Address the below separately from this paragraph.

When would 30b be useful to me?
and
When would the deband filter not be enough?

The Linux drivers support Vulkan as well, but nvidia versioning is stupid and weird.
